Bad Crash and Lessons Learned

Posted 05-25-2008 at 02:45 PM by wannaheli

After about 60 flights I finally had a really bad crash a couple of weeks ago. It rained for days so when the rain abated I immediately took to the field. My first mistake was that the field was soaking wet and had 2 inch puddles everywhere. My second mistake was that I tried to fly beyond my abilities. I blame it on being on the simulator without real stick time. When I got to the field I was over confident and basically dumb thumbed the heli into the ground.

The damage was extensive. The whole head was destroyed and the tail case broke. To rebuild I decided it would be cheaper and easier to buy a complete head. I got a V2 head and it dropped right in. I also replaced the anti-rotation bracket and canopy mounts. I did learn that the plastic canopy mounts saved my frame. The mount just broke off and there was no damage to the frame.

What did I learn? 1. Don't fly beyond your abilities. You have to push yourself to learn but take it easy. 2. Put plastic canopy mounts on your 450. It will save your frame. 3. Don't fly over a soggy field with puddles. I thought I fried all my electronics but I was lucky.
