Most of us that have been around a while have heard of the legendary Japanese company of Kyosho with their high quality machines, precise enough to compete with the best n F3C - though Kyosho still exists they sold their heli line to Quest who have continued to develop and refine the range. Not seen much outside the Far East, the helis continue to feature in F3C competition with their stable mates from JR, Hirobo and more recently Align. The Kyosho CAliber 90 underwent an electric conversion option and more recently has been marketed as the Quest Impaction E12 - the subject of this build series.
Initially I plant to build as flybarred, pod and boom, then add a Funtech Staysee full fuze and end up converting to VBAR and adding a 3 blade head Video 1 - What's In The Box - wmv - 71MB - mp4 238MB Video 2 - Quest Impaction Frames Assembly - mp4 122 MB Video 3 - Installation of Drive Train - mp4 150 MB Video 4 - Rotor Head Assembly - mp4 193MB Video 5 - TAil and boom assembly - mp4 - 182MB

The heli arrives in a BIG brown box containing at least 50% air - most of the volume is takenb up by the canopy box - a rugged, GF affair with the famous F3C pectorals and air vents. THe smaller parts box has an x-ray view of the Impaction on the front and opening up reveals glistening gold anodisation offset by sexy black highlights - gorgeous metalwork !
The boom is CF - odd size 25.5mm diameter and the tail is belt driven. The rotor head comes ready assembled and is the F3C version with flybar and associated gear. The struts are super low profile and the frames are glossy high quality 2mm black CF. Perusal of the guts reveals a two stage drive train - motor pulley via belt to intermediate shaft which gears with a composite alloy/Delrin main gear. Not knowing which motor I would be running I elected to buy a six pack of pulleys from Funtech to accommodate motors from 450-560kV and maybe 12-14S. I think I may put in my sbus servos in this heli to aid with precise, no-subtrim setup and initially plump for the Pyro 700-450 with HJ 120HV on 12S or maybe even give 14S a go !~ THere's a nice Build Thread for the Impaction on ARCHeli and Cygnet's beautiful Impaction in Staysee II fuze is shown above

OK - got the frames together - no big dramas - outer lower and narrow upper makes a nice rigid but good profile frame. Everything fits of course !
The battery tray is very neat Video 2 - Quest Impaction Frames Assembly - mp4 122 MB

Installed the intermediate shaft, belt and motor. Uses a Mitsuboshi 3mm toothed belt to drive from the motor pulley to the intermediate shaft. Found it best to leave the backplate over the intermediate shaft off until the lateral cyclic servos and shaft installed. Only needed a 0.25mm shim to remove all end float.
Gear details are as follows - putting in a maingear ratio of 252.34 into a single stage HS calc will give you the ratios and HS you are looking for. For instance a 20t pulley will gve a ratio of 12.62:1 If you want to use a 2 stage calculator then the intermediate shaft pulley is 50t, the gear on the i/m shaft is 18t which meshes with the stock main gear of 91t. So for a 20t motor pulley 1st stage ratio is 2.5:1 and the second fixed ratio is 5.048:1 (91/18). Initially going to use a Pyro 700-45 for motor and have a set of pulleys to cope with varying motor kV. Have some 14S lipo sets I was going to use for an Xxtreme so may try these first. ALso probably going to use a GY701 with gov so installed magnets into the drive belt pulley rather than the tail drive pulley enabling the gov sensor to be fitted neatly inside the frame. Rotor head comes assembled and a very nice piece of kit it is too. I checked the spindle and see-saw bolts to see if they were Loctited (they were) and didn't disassemble further.
Using the specified swash-servo links the swash sat 18mm above the top bearing block so I made up a Delrin spacer and used that to square up the washout and mixer arms. The ball links were pretty tight so the head is quite stiff - I'll see if they wear in, if not I'll size them using a ball-link reamer. I changed the supplied threaded jesus bolt to a sleeved variety and popped in a couple of nice Kasama washers as it was a bit long. Video 4 - Quest Impaction E12 - Rotor Head - mp4 193MB

OK here's the tail build section - few unusual features like on thrust bearing in the tail rotor and push-pull pushrods for the tail crank but all goes together beautifully. One gotcha is that only about half the throw of the tail is needed for control - too much inward movement of the tail slider can straighten out the link elbos and even flip them which could prove embarassing in flight !

Enjoyed watching you put the tail section together. An impressive design that exudes quality. Now to see someone doing some competitive F3C flying with it.

Maidened her and got 4-5 flights on, beautifully smooth and perfectly axial rolls, then did something really dumb, got myself into a position near the ground and ran out of cyclic
