Can Protos Be Set Up Mild?
Hey Gang,
Looking for an idea...Gonna fly 500 sizes as my smallest Heli, already have a Trex 500 flybarred, but want something more nicely engineered, but can these guys be set up tame for F3C type manuevers, or are they just wild 3D mini-monsters! Gonna maybe do one FBL, to complement the Trex500 that I have to have 2 of the same size birds to continue my training on... Thanks for any ideas... Franz in NJ

Hey Franz,
that's the nice thing about Protos, mild or wild, you decide. Wide range of pinions to choose from, You can even stretch it to run 473s and dial it down some more for a much more "Floaty" feel. With it's light weight you should be able to get some really good flight times from it too.

There is a little pucker factor out of the gate but I've basically learned to fly with mine, that and a Fusion 50.

you are going to need to supply some more info if you want an accurate answer:
FB/FBL - controller? ESC? Motor? Stretch? Blades? Radio? In General: Head speed: low - 2000rpm Expo: lots - 30% DR: low - 70%

I can offer some insight. First of all I would get a castle link so you can use the governor. You can get 2100 governed with 12t pinion which should be pretty good for what you say you want. As far as travels, I would set up the beastx with collective at +/-11° and cyclics at +/-10° at 100 percent travel in the tx. That way you can set your dual rates for like 80% on cyclic to start out with and see how it feels. With maybe 20% expo. I would use the full pitch curve though, you will probably want it at this low head speed. I used to fly my non stretch at 1950 rpm, it was pretty marginal on power though, and on tail authority. It was great for just flying around and getting good flight times though. The low head speed alone makes it less twitchy.

I run a 14t pinion and was using the stock scorpion 3026-880kv. With a shallow v curve around 70% I was getting 7 minute flight times on brand new 6s 2650mah packs.
My headspeed was around 2100rpm or so. If you dont mind a bit more weight, use 6s 2800mah packs. The one I had was shorter than my other 2650 packs and I had to slide it away from the main shaft a bit for proper CG. Still floaty with that setup, but much more tame. |
