Default 12z Non Futaba Flash card?

Hi..
The manual states not to use a flash card other than the one manufactured by Futaba as it may damage the tx..

is this true?

Has anyone tried a regular kingston or sandisc type of card?

Thanks!
Tim

I have used a 512M flash card in my 14MZ since day one. It has worked fine, and I have a TON of models on it, way more than the one provided with the radio. I have loaned out and let people borrow the original card many times and it is very nice to have 2 cards. I keep all the upgrades on teh factory card, so when at the field, people who do not get online can still benefit from the updates.

I use a 128 Mb. So far so good.

I have a 12Z. Have two Sandisk CF cards I bought from the memory store online. One is 64 meg, the other is 128 meg. I got both CF cards for like $15 delivered for both of them. They work fine. I do also like Will, I keep the updates on one and the service menu access files. The other one is the radio where I back my models up to it.
Do not get an ultra card. For example it would have like 256 mb ultra on the label.

My card is an Ultra II. No problems at all for me.
Did you get any, David?

I know of a few that have tried to use Ultra type cards. The radio would not recognize them. Maybe it is not all of the Ultras, but there is a few that the radio has a problem with. A basic 32 meg CF card is more than enough. They can still be obtained for about $5. The Flash-Memory store online is a good source for inexpensive CF cards. I got a 64 mb and 128mb delivered to my house for about $15. Best to stay with like the Sandisk and couple other brand names like Lexar. There is thread about this somewhere here in Helifreak from a couple years ago.

Just get the smallest MB Sandisk or Lexar CF card you can find.

I bought my two from these people, great price and great service

The one above will work I know. I have the 32 mb and 128 mb, I use the 32 mb to keep the utlitity files on to access the service menus

Tomas,
Yes that is part of the problem with using the Mega, Extreme, Ultra type cards. It is just luck if they will work or not. It is best to stick to just the basic as small megabytes as possible cards. The SanDisk basic cards will work, like the two I mentioned in the post next to this one.
There is no need to have an 8 gig card in the radio. At 32 mb the card can store more models than anyone would ever need.

David,
I mostly posted as a point of measurement. I pulled the card from my camera only to try it in th 14MZ. Heck, with the 512 MB cards I also have I'll be able to store a few thousand models and that will be enough for my lifetime I think.
