10 TOOTH PINION GEAR
Hi,
I purchased a used Tempest and it's in excellent shape. It has 8:45 gearing. Since I have an Extreme with a YS 91 in it I want to install a YS 61 in the Tempest. How do I remove the 11 tooth pinon from the clutch stack? I never disassmebled a MA clutch stack and I don't want to damge it during disaasmebly. I plan on using the 93 tooth main gear with the 10 tooth pinon. Other than the pinon is there anything else I need to change? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Chuck

The pinion is a standard threaded part that unscrews lefty-loosy after applying a modest amount of heat to the hub of the bell with either a good heat gun or small torch. A vice grip plier keys in well to the teeth of the pinion; you do NOT have to lock it down. Hold the OD of the bell with a heavy rag. If it slips in the rag, a strip of 600 grit paper won't mess up the anodizing and will provide extra traction.
As I write this, I'm not sure is MA has 9.3 driver plates for the Tempest. That's no real bother since the spacing is only about 30 thou different than that used for the 8.45. Nothing a small amount of work with a dremel to the driver plates wouldn't fix. Ben Minor

I just did this 2 days ago while building my Stratus. 9:3 to 8:45.
I used steady pressure and a good heat gun. I also wrapped the pinion in electrical tape about 4 wraps before using the plyers. Put it on with the tape also but no heat!

Heat up the upper bearing block to get the pinion and the bearing out. MA uses loctite on the outside of the bearings. The upper bearing block houses 3 bearings. You only need to remove the one with the pinion gear. With the right amount of heat, all 3 bearing will just slide out of the bearing block.
