Default 4S-6S Setups

Hey All,

In this thread we'll post information about >3S setups on the Mars and Poseidon rotormachines. So if you're interested in going this route, the information you'll need
will be right here. The beauty about the higher cell count is that you don't need as high a capacity battery as 3S, or a really high discharge rate. You get more power, extended ESC and battery life and more flight time. There will be the increase in weight and loading, you will have to get an external switching BEC.

Depending on which of the two birds you have, your maximum cell count may be limited.
The Poseidon can comfortably accommodate up to 6S lipo packs. The Mars will do 4S, but I'm not sure about 6S, certainly you will have to get the XL tail boom kit to sort out CoG issues, which I think may be more prevalent with a 6S Mars.
One may have to drastically change the arrangement of the trays in the Mars to fit the 6S lipo in such a way as to negate this. HAs anyone done a 6S Mars?

First up will be motor Choices:
Motors

Depending on which cell arrangement you pick, 4S or 6S, you will need to pick a motor with the suitable KV rating:

4S -2500-3000 would be a good choice.

6S- 1600-2100 would be a good choice.

Pinions

ESC
You need an ESC which is capable of handling the voltage of your setup, and the power of your motor. Usually you can look at the manufacturer's specs and see what the motor is rated at in terms of current draw for an operating voltage and use that as a guide. As a start, I take the maxrated power of the motor in W and divide that by the voltage of the setup, then add around 10-20%. Depending on what value I get, I pick the next higher rating for the ESC.
You also need to figure out if you want to use an ESC with or without a BEC, and if you'll use an external one.
I prefer to use external BECs.
LiPos

Prior Work
Here are some threads which discuss these setups for the Gazaurs

Ben White's 4S bird.
https://www.helifreak.com/showthread.php?t=269910

Shopping
www.mars480.com has goodies for going this route. They sell combo kits for 4S and 6S Mars and Poseidons,
ESCs and motors from the scorpion line, and lipos.
There are also the For Sale forums on this site, which you can use to find great deals, caveat emptor.

Well that's the truth isn't it. Have you been collecting the components to for 4S?

My motor and ESC are good for 4s. I just need to get some packs and change out the pinion. I purposely selected the kv of my motor so that I had the option to go 4s. I will post details of my power system and gearing.

Fantastic. I'm putting my shopping list together for my 6S Poseidon. I am actually considering rewrapping my dead Lingo V1 to 1630 or so Kv and changing the bearings to
ceramics.

Welp, looks Like I might be going 4S on the Mars just like you...The Lingo in my Mars packed up and took the ESC out with it. So I need two new motors and two new ESCs for both birds. Oh dear.

My Ice 50 Came this morning! Gotta solder on connectors and set it up. All I need now are some 4S packs,to have a newly powered Mars.
Got an old axi 3000kv motor which i used before switching to the lingo.

Welp, spoke too soon. I need a Castle Link to program this thing .
This is so ridiculous, inside the packaging, I get a coupon for a free castle link.
Neat, unfortunately, I've got to pay international shipping and wait almost another
2 weeks to get it. Seriously. if you are going to give a free castle link coupon with
every purchase, why not bundle the castle link with the ESC?

I couldn't agree more. Sometimes I wonder how folks sleep at night. But, they have to offset cost somewhere? This is how they might make 2 dollars on a 85.00 sale. -- IF all goes as planned.

TESLA? did he ever get it working?

Back to praetorious. Thats was very cold of them (especially being International). not a good way to keep customers. It's one thing if you didn't need it to program your esc, its another when they holding you ransom. shame on them.

Man, I feel bad about it cause it could have been avoided if I had read further ahead, and seen that i would need the link to program heli functions. then i would have bought one at the same time. I bought the Ice cause it was a good deal, data logs... But still, i would have got the esc and the link, and when i opened the package, the coupon would be there. Which would piss me off still, because I could have saved the cost. Ugh.
Makes me wish I bought the scorpion from mars 480. Comes with the wireless programmer and would have been cheaper in the long run.

Okay, I'm going to bit the bullet and get some 4s packs. Currently on 3s I'm running a 13T pinion, a 3600 kV motor and turning around 2600 in idle 2. The governor in my Ice Lite 50 is slamming into 100% thottle during high power moves. Granted some of my packs are now 3 years old and have 150+ cycles on them!

With some nice new 4s packs I'll be dropping down to a 10T or 11T pinion and maybe bumping the headspeed up a little. I'll report back with my results and some pics.

My personal opinion is that TESLA was into something big, otherwise Mr. J P Morgan and his electric company would not have stopped founding his free energy experiments... but we will never know.

I'll be ordering my 4S and 6S (mayhaps 3S pairs?) to coincide with a goods shipment in about a month or so.
I must say, despite being pissed off with the castle link issue, this is one nice ESC. It fits perfectly under the beak bulge when using the diagonal tray slots and the stock wires don't need to be shortened, simply neatly coil them into the space between the ESC and upper frame.
I put in 3 flights today, and everything came down cool. The AXI isn't nearly as powerful as my lingo, but i certainly forgot just how smooth it was. Running on a 12T pinion, so not a rocket, but it really makes you appreciate how stable this bird is. I think that my Mars will balance perfectly with 4S packs.

As for the Poseidon, my package from mars480.com came, so I can get that bird back up and running mechanically at least.

Default 6s Poseidon in the air!

Today i had the first lift with the 6s setup in my Poseidon....
A veeeery nice sound, seems very smooth and runs like a cat on pure cream!
The weather here is still lots of snow every single day for a week now but i will try to make a few shots tomorow.

Setup
Hobbywing 6s 40A Pemtium Esc
Hobbymate 6s 2000kv motor
Outrage 1300mah 25c lipo
Some adjustments is needed but in all its veeery promising and i get away with a low cost setup that seems to run very well!

Awesome! I'm following this thread pretty intently, I've already decided that a HV setup is *definitely* the way to go for any 450/480 that you can do it on.
