Sorry for the delays...
On this project. I have been taking care of, and just spending time with my Dad alot this year and most of my projects took a back seat to the time I shared with him. It was time well spent, as we lost him in July. My Dad was very much a part of my flying world and the main reason I love the heli's so much(his unit "7th Cav" was very instrumental in flushing out the hydraulic issues that the UH1 huey had during Vietnam). He also did most of the work fitting a Lycoming T55-L-7C engine(almost 1700 more HP) and ajoining transmission(CH47A chinook) into a UH1 Huey. It supposedly was capable of lifting the same weight of todays blackhawks and then some + almost cobra like speeds. The T55 proved to have a "little" too much grunt and was quite time consuming in getting it fitted to the UH1 as almost everything had to be hand fabricated because this was an "In the Field" project. After Nam,dad walked right into "Aeroquip Aerospace" as one of their prototype machinists. The U.S. army released Dad early at Aeroquip's request.
So you can see between giving me the love for the machine and the skills to be able to do prototype machine work, my Dad was a BIG part of my life. I will get back to this project in the very near future as one of the things Dad said to me just before he left was"Don't give up the flying! I always enjoyed watching you fly." I didn't do it so much after my mom passed in 2010, and he knew that his leaving would rock me as well. I will come back to it soon, I promise. When I do, I will have measurements of how to make your own parts (garage style) so you can do your own conversion. Tom Last edited by Machinehead01; 08-26-2013 at 09:15 AM.. |

Thank you, Vertico.
He was indeed. He was an outside of the box thinker and made some special type stuff for his friends in Nam. One of his pet projects for a colonel friend of his and which was later patented by the same guy, was the first shark stick that used a 12 gage shotgun shell. Seems the colonel was an avid skin diver and decided he had had one to many run ins with the local sharks that swam in his diving spot. He asked dad for a spear gun type weapon and dad fixed him up with the shark stick. Some of the things WE used to build together has me wondering how I am still alive today. Probably would see jail time if we had done it in todays environment. Always thinking and pushing me to do the same, funny thing is it was almost always about more power.
