Cheers for that Dave. So it's just the finish then so it's a personal preference thing then

On your pre prod model, you had metal tail blade holders, did you notice any vibes at all to do with this? Just wonderering why they switched to plastic. Obviously the plastic grips will be a lot more forgiving so maybe vibes were present on some of the testing models or they just thought it better to have them as plastic in the long run?

Regarding the servos, if I had followed it as per the manual I would have installed them already but I wanted to get on with these bits.
That's a pain so will take a peek tomorrow. Getting the main gear in was a little fiddly so could do without having to remove it

That main gear makes your hands look tiny.

Those parts looks like they have been in the "vibrator" as we call it at my workplace
It is a deburring method where you put the parts in a bunch of approx 1 cm rocks inside a vibrating machine, and let it go for a while with soap added. Works quite good on large amounts of parts.
Cheap cleaning and removing of sharp metalburrs.
Will give a similar surface finish as i can see from your pictures.
Example:
Vibratory Bowl Finishing Machine (2 min 2 sec)

Damn that xxtreme is nice

Got any up close pics of the head? I was hoping they would do some sort of matte finish on the aluminum...

@ jamin 00,

Plastic tail blade grips? All I can say is the life span of the tail hub o-ring dampeners about doubled when we finally got the plastic grips, and the "chinese weight mode" to keep the stress off the tail servo was no longer necessary.

There are obviously parts of a heli you need to be metal. But Mikado loves plastic moldings, and (my opinion...but the opinion comes out of experience), in certain applications, with a properly designed part made from the right type of "plastic" (if you want to call it that...it's some type of carbon reinforced polymer I think), the Mikado plastic moldings are far superior to the same part made from metal. Lighter, just as strong (or strong enough) for the application, cheaper for the consumer to buy, vibration absorbing, and can have cool shapes and designs metal parts usually don't have.

Mikado going to "plastic" tail blades grips is not a downgrade...but an upgrade actually.

#im concerned with the mesh and the main gear. Typically you see maidens strip the gear but i have this aligned perfect so its just a case of the mesh. It says to allow a slight mesh which I have got a slight mesh so will see how it goes I guess.

The sheer size of the main gear and pinion make the XXtreme's gear mesh less "critical" than say a Logo 600 with a high power set-up. The gears as usual aren't perfectly round, so set the mesh to no wiggle on the high spot, and take the wiggle everywhere else.

If set like this (and the herringbone pinion is properly aligned with the main gear), you won't strip it...can't strip it (-: The drive train on the XXtreme is VERY, and I repeat, VERY tough. In all the thousand + flights Kyle's put on his machines flying them hard, we've never stripped a gear. In fact, we've never worn one out either. As far as we can tell, barring damage in a crash, they'll last forever (-:

Good to know.

I have always managed myself to get the mesh correct before but it's in my mind tat if it strips on maiden due to incorrect mesh or whatever then it will take 3 weeks for a replacement to come through lol.

But your words give me a lot of good feelings about it.

Test spool up tomorrow without blades.

Maiden will be Sunday at the club

"Maiden will be Sunday at the club"

Oh man How could you stand all the pressure of ANY maiden flight (much less something as different as the XXtreme), in front of a group of probably the worst critics on the planet (R/C heli pilots).

What kind of head speed and collective settings you striving for?

Well it's not mine but I have set it up at 11.5 + and -

The settings for the Tc I have yet to go on a head speed calculator but I will be setting it for 1600 in normal 1700 in idle 1 and 1800 in idle 2. I think these are good staring points???

Then Gareth (who's Heli it is) can do what he want and he is in to hard 3D so who knows lol

Ditch the calculator (-: The pinion size for the pack voltage and motor kv you're running is already established, so...

A nice feature about using the V-Bar's governor, is when you run it on the bench without blades, the governor will read-out the head speed your running, and you can set the head speeds for each flight mode right on the bench.

We've checked the accuracy of this with a head tach a million times (didn't trust it at first), to make sure it's accurate. It's been right on every time...so much so, we don't even check any more. Just set head dpseeds on the bench, and go fly.

First Xxtreme in Australia is mine. Just picked it up an hour ago.For scale of the size of the box I'm the "younger", taller bloke on the left and I'm 6'7".

Let the build begin.

Just a special thanks again to Dave Dahl for all the info and answering more than one of my pm's to help with servo choices etc. Really appreciate that, thanks Dave.
