Visit to KASAMA Factory
Many of you may not know that Kasama factory rests out in beautiful helicopter flying country (flat paddy fields - no trees) an hour's drive east of Bangkok in Thailand.
You probably know that Kasama is a producer of high quality add-ons and the customised Srimok rotor head for a range of helicopters. Mr Kasama kindly agreed to show me round the factory and take a glimpse of the forthcoming Srimok 90 helicopter which should be released in the next 2-3 months. Kasama used to design precision arrays for mobile phone antenna arrays and as is so often the case was dissatisfied with existing helicopters so decided to put his precision engineering background into making his own ! First impression of the factory was it's orderliness and cleanliness The design area sported racks of shelves with carcasses of a few helicopters, precision bits from full-size aircraft and I even noticed an early V-Stabi lurking away in a corner Ever wondered how a ball link is made ? Well there's a long feeder of steel rod: Which ends up in a CNC lathe: And out pops the ball links with a bucket full of breakfast for Iron Man (steel swarf) There follows a range of cabinets containing CNC milling machines: variously programmed to produce blade grips, mixer arms or other precision components:

What of course really caught my interest was the late stage prototype of the Srimok 90 - Srimok being Thai for the winged horse Pegasus which in Thai mythology can also travel underground (like my helicopters ) The paramount design features being rigidity, precision and freedom of vibration - bit like my flying
The base plate consists of a chunky CNC base with a YS motor mounted in plastic grommets to cut down vibration transmission: The CF sides enclose a narrow-width top frame which bolts onto the CNC base for easy access to transmission - no the CNC machining for the tank isn't crooked - it's designed that way so the clunk rests in those last drops of fuel : The top of the frame gets interesting - check out the funny looking swash: Nice CNC bearing blocks (with oil holes !!) and anti-rotation device: And the novel cyclic servo arrangement: And torque couplings: The thought to detail stretched out to the tail - the boom struts brace carefully angulated to cut out boom twisting torque forces from bolting on flat strut ends onto angulated frame mounts and the tail pushrod is in two pieces to reduce vibration transmission to the tail with the connector piece running through a linear roller bearing (that I hadn't seen before !!) The whole design smacked of careful though and innovation and I for one can't wait - needless to say I put my pre-order in !! Thanks very much to Kasama and team who took out a couple of hours out of their holiday to show me round and I must say I haven't met a more unassuming bunch of guys keen to share their love of helis !!

Nice visit report John! I wish I could have gone with ya
That 90 looks very cool! I like a lot of the design and different ways of doing things. That swash looks HOT! Bob

What do you guys think of the servo system, will it not over stress the servo's.
Saying that Kasama must have done the math. That 90 does look HOT. Edit: Actually looking at the design again, it's LESS stress on the servos.

Genius, all torque is centerlined for almost zero stress.

Looking at the end support of the servo torque rods in bearing blocks I'd agree that there would be no radial stress applied to the servo output shaft. Also it looks like the radial arms on the end of the shaft may be adjustable enabling perfectly square settings without subtrim. I think AK was referring to the torque output of the servos moving the cyclic and this looks no different to any other design cyclic load - in fact with the trend to have 2:1 cranks it is probably less - main benefit as I see it is elimination of slop and backlash in the servo-swash linkage which will depend mostly on the gear train of the servo.
Seems to work OK - here's a video I found from 3D Masters 2008 flown by Theeradet Mahamontree

There are several freaky German heli brands that use this type of servo set (ask Dicey), the most interesting of which is when its used on the tail pitch.

We saw the proto type at 3D masters in the summer, incredible looking machine.
We also spent the Saturday evening drinking with the Kasama guys, great products and great bunch of guys! |

Can you do me a favor Mr. Mercuriell? .... Can you go back to the factory( you're alot closer than I am) and ask the Kasama boys to make a red main grip arm, I have the Kasama head for my Trex but I kinda like red anodizing in place of the black.
I doubt I'll be able to afford a .90 size from them so I figured I'd try and grasp this one straw |

I agree about the nice red colour - sadly it was a days trip to Kasama factory at Supan Buri even when staying in Bangkok and now I'm back in Oz - why not send him an email
