Not exactly concerning the tension pulley (mine is long gone) but I found (by accident when replacing tail rotor shaft bearings) that the stock gear on the rotor shaft on my SEv2 wasn't turning true. It had a wobble as it turned. Shaft is strait but it was like the metal drum gear wasn't drilled right. It was easy to see as I spun it in my fingers, but you would never notice it when mounted in the tail case. Least I didn't. No big deal, LHS had the shaft/gear in stock.
Just something else to check for next time you happen to have cause to take apart the tail case or if you're breaking belts all the time |

Since suffering the usual belt problem nearly two years ago I've had a flanged pulley fitted. I can't help but wonder if part of the reason that works is that it's simply a smaller dia over the area that the belt runs in (the flanges are the same dia as the Align pulley).
Anyway, today I noticed a bit of fluffyness developing on the edges of the belt. Given that it was fairly even on both sides I doubt its a pulley issue, but I've taken the plunge and removed it altogether. I'd not had any problems, but now that I've (at last) started doing some basic 3D I figure there will be more strain on the tail belt, so I'm keen to do anything to alleviate that. I also found a can of silicone spray in the garage and have given the tail a dose of that. Certainly spins more freely now, although I suspect that's more down to the lube than the loss of the pulley. Steve |

Your Heli Will Crash and Burn
I keep seeing people saying to remove the pulley but no one EVER states the obvious for the Noobs; YOUR HELI WILL CRASH AND BURN.
Why will is crash? Easy, you are flying. Suddenly your belt breaks. Now your heli is spinning like a top. You hit your throttle hold, the spinning slows but now you have a date with the ground. Since your heli is spinning wildly you, as a noob, can't keep it level. CRUNCH! Your heli kisses the earth on its side breaking rotor blades, bending metal and possible smashig servos. If you are really unlucky like me, you "taco yer pack"... So, leave it on and you could be doin a major fix, take it off and listen to the stories and feel lucky you eliminated one horrible "IF" from flying yer heli! |

OK, so I'm going to be a heretic...
I replaced the roller with an ARK X400 roller, part number 4003-305 as shown below in Jan '08: I'd been very pleased, there being no repeat of previous belt naughtyness; just a bit of fluff on the edges. On Friday night I removed it... on Saturday I noticed the tail was fluttering in bit, and the headspeed didn't seem stable. I played around with the gyro gain to no avail. Belt tension was fine. After some flips and general charging around the sky, the heli decided to piro slowly right. Not sure why, but foolishly I tried to recover rather than gain height to give myself more time. The result: This evening I repaired the damage and took to the skies again... still fluttering. Stuck the roller back; all back to normal. More solid tail. More stable headspeed. One thing that has improved though is smoothness and noise as also applied silicone lube to the belt for the first time when I removed the roller, and I'll be continuing to do that. Steve |

So the idea is to lube the belt itself, not just the rolling parts in the tail? I haven't been doing this, for fear of the belt slipping...
I too have opted for the flanged pulley. What I can't understand though is that when I bought my Trex450 used from my LHS, it was in great shape and came with the standard pulley installed. After a few flights I learned the woes of the idler pulley. I can't figure out if the previous owner flew it like that with no issues, or if he re-installed it to sell the thing. I'm guessing that's what happened... |

Looks like i have to join the idler pulley problem crowd too. After 11 flights the belt jumped off to the left side. I didn't know about this issue at the time. I'm still a beginner..
So I Fixed it, tightened the belt and two flights later it jumps off again. Well, now I at least know what to do about it Not decided yet if I should remove it all together or use a flanged pulley. I'll read some more about it first. |

A logic question for ya. If removing the idler solves the problem what in the world would the need of a Flanged Pulley be!?! What is it about the Flanged Pulley that people think they are getting. I mean it's silly to add a part that removing the part fixed, but people still do. Anyway the answer is adding a Flanged Pulley equates to nothing but $$$$ (and I don't care how cheap it is, these things are a function of all it parts not just one, cost and weight mount and pretty damn quick at that) out of your pocket and the reintroduction of the friction the original pulley sported... Remove the Idler then happy flying, nuff said, again Sorry if I sounded a little too rough but this gets said allot.

I think some people see the function of the idler pulley and therefore change it to a flanged pulley so solve the problem that way.
When remooving the pulley there si a potensial fore pulley slipping and some pilots conserne about that and use a flanged pulley to get happy fore themselfs.

Well yes there's obviously something going on with the thinking and although I think I can see the concerns they just don't add up. It's a none issue a fix without a problem for lack of a better word it's better all around without and to make an machine worse for no good reason and that's just a little puzzling.... Guess if it makes one feel good then who I'm I to say otherwise... Sorry for being so mean "let the world run flanged pulleys all night long" {sung to some really weird house music ya hear in those 3D vids}

Well, I replaced the belt and decided to just not have a pulley at all and be done with it. The belt didn't look bad from a quick look but after taking it out, it was definitely in bad shape.
