el wire (cold light string)breakage
got tired of breaking my great planes fly lights(cold light strings) from repeated crashing/mishandling. So I ordered some thicker ones from elwirepros.com. Anyone had experience with these guys?
The website looked questionable but I rolled the dice anyway. I got an inverter and two 2 foot strings coming, one 3.2mm and the other 5mm. After searching the internet, I found no red flags on this website. I got burned by vibelights.com a few years ago, and am still weary of non rc vendors/websites. Nothing against the flylights or align light strings, but Im lookin for something a little more durable. I'll post a review when my order arrives. |

el wire continued
heres some pics of teh new el wire.
The greatplanes flylights driver worked just fine with these two. I think only the outer sleeve is thicker than the 2.2mm flylights. These look quite sturdy and should handle the inevitable crashes a little better. Gonna round it off with a clear canopy from mars480.com, and hopefully some custom night blades. |

The glow wire operates on ~110VAC, at 2,000 to 4,000 Hz.
The driver converts the 11.1VDC into the needed power.

el wire
the flylights light string driver plugs into a spare channel on the receiver, so its not running on 11.1v Gonna go home and check the actual voltage on the batt/bind channel of my ar6000 to get you an accurate input voltage.
The 12v driver I ordered from elwire pros SHOULD run directly off a 3s tho 12.6v may be a little hot. I didnt like the align cold light string drivers as they have a JST plug for input voltage Hope this helps. Last edited by kavic5150; 08-10-2010 at 12:24 PM.. Reason: omitted info |

So did you have any problem with EL wire guys? I'm thinking in doing an order to these guys.
Thanks! |

No problem with elwirepros.com. I would recommend the 3.2mm size elwire, the 5mm was just too heavy and cut down on the light output. I think the actual el wire itself is the same size regardless of silicone tubing thickness.
I didn't mention in my previous posts that the 12v power supply that came from elwirepros is too heavy for a 450 size heli. i would recommend either the align cold light string driver that comes prewired with a JST connector for a 2s lipo, or the flylites light tube controller that has a servo connection and runs on 4.8v to 6v. Use 6v for max brightness. A google search for "great planes flylites light tube" gave several results. The align driver is easy to find. I've moved on to LED light strings, they are MUCH brighter and you dont have to worry about keeping the light string power supply away from other electronics like ESCs or RXs. Just a few words of caution. Elwire uses a ballast producing several hundred volts and should be used carefully and kept away from children. Elwire uses PVC and smells TERRIBLE when new, just like a brand new plastic shower curtain or beach ball. I think it releases chlorine until fully cured. Store this in a well ventilated location and dont let kids or pets (or inlaws) chew on it. Last edited by kavic5150; 05-30-2011 at 11:21 AM.. Reason: typo |

Is that the one that is to heavy for a 450? I thought at one ounce it was pretty light?
