Newbie question re: TP-610C charger
Hello all,
I'm new to rc heli's and just kind of took what my LHS set me up with for the T-Rex 500 w/Align 6s 2500 mah 25C Li-po battery. They've been great by the way, but are closed on Sunday's. They gave me the Thunder Power 610C charger w/built in balancer and a Pro-Peak AC power supply. They also gave me a connector w/two banana plugs (red/black) on one end and Anderson connectors on the other (red/black). The input leads to the 610, however are aligator type clips. I'm assuming that the banana plugs on the one connector they gave me, go into the output jacks of the power supply. If so how do I connect the anderson's on the other end to input aligators on the 610? Do I cut off the alligators' on the input line of the 610 and replace them with anderson's? This would allow me to then connect to the pro peak power supply with the supplied connector (banana/andersons). Or do I just unscrew the plastic connector housings on the power supply and connect/clip the alligators onto the exposed shaft of the power supply's banana connectors? I'm beginning to think that the connector (described above) the LHS gave me (banana-red/blk.) one end, andersons (red/blk) on the other is supposed to be for connecting the output of the 610 directly to the Li-po. and that I either need another connector for connecting the power supply to the 610 or I just use the alligator clips as I described above? I guess the little card is for the "balancer" aspect of the battery charge. The manual for this charger leaves a lot to be desired. Sorry for the rambling here, I just don't want to hook it up wrong and ruin any of this expensive equipment. Any advice on this would be appreciated! Thanks in advance for any thoughts or comments! Assumptions
1- The Pro-Peak has binding post terminals (ie: for banana plug) 2- Your Lipos use Deans connector 3- By "Anderson", you mean Anderson PowerPole (APP)?? Attached is a photo of my setup. 1. Power supply: output leads to an Anderson Powerpole break-out port ( 6 ports) 2. All my chargers (and ham radio equipment for that matter) use Anderson PowerPole for power input 3. For output on the TP-610 you can use standard banana plugs OR 4mm bullet connectors. 4. My output for the charger is a banana to APP, then I have several APP adapaters ie: APP - Deans, APP to servo, APP to coaxial (TX), APP to mini Deans, etc... 5. Yes, the card is the adapter boards for balancing. Your LiPo should have both the balancing port and the Deans connected to the charger prior to initiate the charge cycle. ... So you probably need another pair of banana plugs OR some 4mm bullet connectors to complete your setup |

Dear marchambault
Thanks for responding to my questions. The photo is especially helpful! My LHS doesn't like "Deans". They recommend APP's for everything (I think). They spent an hour yesterday with me showing me how to crimp APP connectors onto my Li-Po and speed control so they could be hooked up. Sold me the crimping tool and a bunch of connectors and contacts. Even a little tool that helps you snap the contact into the plastic housing of the connector. They said you don't have to use "Deans", that you can just use APP's. When I got home yesterday from the LHS and looked at my Align 25C 6s Li-po they had sold me when I first bought the 500 kit, it already had APP's on it. Apparently they had already rigged that particular battery with the APP connectors. They did sell me an adaptor with bananas on one end and APP's on the other, but I'm thinking that is how you connect the output of the 610 to the Li-Po which is what I think you are saying. If you cannot effectively connect the the 610 to the power supply with the alligator clips that came attached to the 610's output leads, then you're right, I'll need another banana plug adaptor and then I'll have to cut off the alligators on the 610 leads and replace with APP connectors. Let me know if any of this makes sense. Additionally, you mentioned that you had a coaxial to APP adaptor for your Transmitter. My LHS sold me a "JR GPMM3102 adaptor and a APP connector so that I can charge my DX7 from my 610. Can I use my "banana to APP" lead to do this by connecting the banana's to the output of the 610 and then connecting the APP's to the coaxial adaptor that plugs directly into the charging port of the DX7? Thanks again for your very helpful reply. DH |

cdkoho,
I haven't used my 610 yet. I'm still trying to figure out how to hook it up to the Pro-Peak power supply with the supplied Alligator clip input leads? I do like the idea of the 610's built in balancer though. Good Luck! DH Virginia |

I like APP for applications where vibrations are not an issue. I feel that Deans holds tighter than APP. SOme APP contacts do have a higher current rating than Deans. APP ($10 for 10 M/F connectors) are also much less expensive than Deans ($2 each) and you never have exposed terminals (ie: like charger output jacks or when connecting packs in parallel). Quote:

Caution! Some people use a different APP setup for input vs output ... ie instead of side by side they place one over the other. This avoids connecting a Lipo to the wrong end! Quote:

Thanks again! You've been more than helpful! The crimper alone was $70.00 (I'm an idiot), but I don't know how to solder and LHS said you can really screw up these connections if you don't know what you're doing. Its a one time purchase, now I have it. The little push tool was $5.00. Yes, you can unscrew the plastic housings on the power supply enough to clamp the alligator's to the connector shafts. I just wasn't sure if this would provide a good enough connection for charging, or if it would hurt anything. Next week I'll get another banana to APP lead and cut the alligators off of the 610's input leads and replace with APP connectors as you suggest. The transmitter adaptor for my DX7, according to the manual, should work with regard to correct polarity. The manual says the inside (center pin) is NEGATIVE and the outside is POSITIVE. I believe that is what your photo shows also. So that should be okay. I assume that you connect the banana adaptor to the output of the 610, and then connect the APP's on the other end to the coaxial charger adaptor, which then, of course is plugged directly into the DX7 for charging. Will the 610 tell me when the charging cycle for the TX is complete? Thanks again for your all your help! Sincerely, DH |
