Default The Early-Bird Special Training Schedule

I've been getting up at 5:30AM to bring my wife to the bus stop to go to work while my car has been in the shop. I've been thinking of maybe spending the 45 minutes to 1 hour I have open after I come back home before I have to leave for work to do some practicing on the sim.

It's too cold and dark at 6AM to go to the field here and I wouldn't have enough time to go there, fly and then go to work since it's 20 minutes from my house and then 15 minutes to work. Have to be at work by 8AM.

Does anyone have any recommendations on a training schedule to follow? Maybe the 6 month plan from the sticky above?

How long have you been doing that and how have you progressed since you started?

I guarantee you, that if you follow that sticky of Archmage, you will progress. If you just keep it up two months you'll already be amazed at what you are suddenly capable of and how comfortable you feel.
I can't recommend his method enough.

Up right will come relatively faster
If you are more than 40 the inverted flight will probably take more than 6 months.
The progression will be however amazing. You will never regret.

Those 30 min early morning are my daily joga.

that old chestnut again. actually, people over 40 dont learn noticably slower than young people. its a myth. like in most things there is going to be much more variation between individuals of any age than between age groups. until senility creeps in obviously.

its true that young people can learn languages faster, (and possibly have faster reactions, although not necessarily; it depends on the person) but thats a specific area of brain development and may not mean young people learn things faster across the board.

in theory, adults could actually learn faster than children because they have learnt how to learn, and can apply that knowledge to new tasks, and may also be more focused on learning. i remember taking forever to learn how to ride a bike. i could definitely learn that relatively simple skill as fast today because i know how to apply myself to new tasks logically. kids in general have little experience in anything and often little confidence in themselves. its a great hindrance to learning new things.

current research seems to suggest the adult brain is actually pretty good at rewiring itself. problems with adult learning are mainly fear of aging, finding excuses not to bother, or lack of confidence.

also kids have more time. i bet if kids and adults (of same motivation level and health) were given a new task to learn, and the same time to learn it, the adults would beat the kids.

there are not many young people (under 30) that could flying inverted competently in 6 months, from scratch. if they were to do so, they would need a huge amount of sim time. i would bet someone over 40, given the same time could also do it just as fast.

Children learn faster than adults for one reason. (Probably many, but this is a big one I've witnessed)

Children make up their minds, adults have to change their minds.

How many times, while learning something difficult such as flying helis, or music or a language.. do you hear an adult say "This is too hard" or "damn this is difficult" or the big one... "I'll never pick this up."

How many times have we each said that flying these crazy machines?

Then answer this.
When a young child is learning something challenging like .. helis or music etc. How many times do they beat themselves down?

I watched a 40yr old (ish) Dad, bring his son to the hobby shop one day. The dad had been flying for 6 months, and could barely hold a steady tail in hover. He was on the sim saying stuff like "I still can't get it" or "this hobby is way too difficult."
His son sat at the sim for probably 30 minutes solid. He was (not amazingly well, but "sufficiently") doing forward circuits. He held a smile the whole time.

It's all in the mindset. That's it.

I found the thread and started using parts of it about Jan of this year for training but didn't really take it seriously

About April I gave up and stated fresh, forgot everything I thought I knew. Keep in mind I've been flying a couple years now, I felt I was pretty decent before finding the thread and boy was I in for a ass whoopin. It was pretty clear in the first few lessons that I was not comfortable in a few orientations, and hurricanes I could only do in one direction

I wasted a year and a half not learning the basics and straight into banging the sticks I have to admit.

I'm happy to report that I'm on lesson 11 and doing funnels in all orientations and directions and in the next week I feel I should be doing funnel figure 8s lesson

People under 25 do actually learn faster because there brains are still actively creating there neural network. Thats all relative of course because life is complicated and there are many factors involved

I'm 45, and am just learning to fly helis. Granted, I have airplane experience... but I feel like I'm picking up the inverted stuff pretty quickly. I can slow piro hover inverted for 15 minutes without crashing, and if I get out of my "box", I can fly it back into range without stopping the piro and flipping upright. I still have to think about which direction to move the sticks sometimes... But it's getting better. Listening to music to occupy that side of my brain is really helping. I agree with those who say it's more of a mindset issue than an age issue... Be determined, stick with it, and have fun, and it will come.

+1.

Tell yourself you CAN learn and you are right. Tell yourself you CANNOT learn and you are also right. Attitude is everything.

+1 also on the listening to music.

Good going. Have fun and happy flying.

Thank you so much for the training routine. It really works very well... and I know you put forth a lot of time and effort not only creating and maintaining it, but answering and helping the hundreds of people who use it. Hats off to you sir!

Yep. Our little archmage, all grown up. I remember his first days, and now he's helped more people than I could count

And I don't forget those who helped me. gitbse you were a huge support when I was starting.

I want to help as many as I can because I still remember what it feels like to start (and to struggle to find good information).

In my current flying, I still have a long way to go. I am comfortable but not content. (ie. It still takes me over 30 mins to complete all levels of RF orientation trainer and not fully comfortable with IRL autorotations).

Hear, Hear!

I also remember Archmage coming onto the scene with great ideas, a focus and a plan.

Archmage, you have been a tremendous asset to this hobby! It's been incredible watching how much you have contributed to training and SIMming. I don't know how you find the time to be so tremendously helpful to so many people while advancing your own skills/knowledge at breakneck pace. The Sorcerer's Apprentice has truely become a Master!
