The black residue is signal of belt deterioration, maybe is time for a belt replacement.

7.2 belt
Thanks Nelson, What are you guys seeing on the life span of these belts? The instructions say to run it tight ,could running it too tight cause it to wear faster? I can see some black dust around it but appears to be in good shape still.

I run my belts really tight, I use a flat head driver to pull the motor mount and get the belt tensioned properly. To get the best out of your belt is critical to align the motor mount correctly. Pull the motor mount and tight the top screws and leave the side frame screws for last. look the letters on the belt, they need to align with the motor pulley, most of the times I need to put pressure to lift the front of the motor mount to get a proper alignment, after that you can tight the two side frame screws. Another tip that help to keep the belts lasting longer is to use silicone spray every 10-20 flights. You can spray a bit on the inside of the belt. Before installing a brand new belt, I recommend to place the belt on a plastic bag with silicone spray for at lease 10 minutes. Life span varies on amount of pitch, rpm's, motor, flying style, etc... Is hard to determine an exact number, I usually change mines every 50-70 flights just to be in the safe side. This is just my personal preference and doesn't mean that they cannot last longer, just to be clear.

I don't believe the black colouring is anything to worry about. I stripped my last belt around 130 flights. Looking back i should have known it was coming about 3 flights prior as it starts to give out little black bits.
This time i tensioned the motor again after 5 flights on the new belt, its now real tight.

dark gear
This normal after many flights
no grease is needed as the aluminum gears are titanium coated if you are interested in using some lubricant, try "dry-fluid".
