FIrst scale build - which one :)
Time has come in my heli career to build something BIG - scale and turbine
I don't want to spend a year building though have the patience and skill to assemble a kit - after a lot of reading think I have come down to the 2m Lama from S-S-M or the new Bell 429 kit from Vario - coupled with a Jakadovsky 5000 Pro turbine. Anyone got any thoughts ????

I am the opposite. Everyone and their brother has Lamas and really, unless it is fully detailed and spectacular, it's just another big helicopter. There are few really large 429's and I have seen the Vario up close and it flies extremely stable. You will be the first one on your block with it. I have nothing against the Lama, just that there are so many of them at any given event. Take care.

Well....lets compare the two:
Bell 429: Very nice scale fuselage Room enough for scale cockpit and scale cabin Build time ?? 4 blade rotor can be heavy What will it take to repair if crashed Lama 315: Somewhat Pod-n-Boom Room for scale cockpit Build time ?? 3 blade rotor Can be a lot lighter in weight What will it take to repair if crashed Me......I like the Lama.... Here a video of Gonzalo's Lama: |

I think the Lama now is too common in rc. Yes they look nice but I would do something different. If your going to put a lot of $ and time into building a turbine heli which you certainly will, it would be good to build whatever Heli is in your mind that is you dream model. Don't build something because it's convenient because your passion and heart won't be in it. When you are passionate about something it's amazing what you can acheive.

Thanks for the comments guys, I do like the look of the Lama but the 429 has an option of an electric drive conversion for a Pyro 800 which may be a convenient staging post before switching to turbine. Flyability is important to me and I am reassured by Don's comment. I will probably go for the 429 with a 4 blade head!

May I just mention that the version that I did see fly was, in fact, electric and it has all the power you would ever need to fly it fully scale detailed inside. The interior kits you get for them are basic, get the idea across, but do not have anywhere near the detail that can be put in them. I am fairly sure that it is very close to 1/6th scale therefore allowing you to buy very realistic figures for the pilots. It's scary how real my two look.

Subscribed John.... Can wait for the build to start.
I like the thought process of going from e to turbine as it will be very helpful for many of the folks lurking here who appreciate the education. Ray
