"that is a pretty beafy head!!"

To put it in perspective, in the video, @ 0:48 seconds, there is a shot of the spindle and main gear. The spindle is 12mm !! (Logo 600 is 8mm), the thrust bearings are 23mm !! (Logo 600 is 15mm).

The main gear has 175 teeth !!, (Logo 600 has 106...Rave ENV as an example has 130 I think). The main gear is so big that the Mod 1.0 teeth look like they are Mod .7's on a "standard" size gear. It's also 15mm tall !! (Logo 600 and many other main gears are 10mm), and the gear is herringbone as well.

The head is designed to carry 800mm blade stresses...so 700mm class blades won't even make it breath hard.

The benefit of such a large gear is that in order to maintain usable gear ratios, the pinion must be proportionately larger as well. Larger pinions on larger gears become proportionately harder to strip. Combine that with the gear being 15mm tall, herring-boned, the pinion being counter-bearing (and heat-sinked), and made out of Mikado's carbon reinforced polymer stuff (hate to even call it plastic), the main drive system becomes extremely difficult to strip (dare I say impossible to strip with "standard" current 700 sized power systems). It's designed with the future in mind.

Without going into all the boring details, the tail drive system is just as tough.

Kyle, have you had the opportunity to fly it? If so, can you share some of your experience with the heli?!

FUNBOSS,

Kyle is busy at school learning calculus, so I'll answer (-:

Mikado has graciously kept Kyle in the loop "information wise" about the development of the model, which is why I've been able to "vaguely" discuss in the past some of the coming virtues of the design.

But we are far too far away from Germany to do any prototype flying for Mikado. It just doesn't work. Shipping costs alone back and forth would break the bank. Some very competent pilots in Germany have been handling that task for Mikado.

Now that the "show" is over, Mikado will put the model into Kyle's hands (and possibly other Team Mikado pilots as well), will they'll start flying and learning the model. At that point we'll be talking to Mikado on a daily basis about our experiences with the model. Kyle will do his best to break it, and will be extracting as much performance out of the model as the power systems we have can provide. If there is a problem with the design or materials, Mikado wants to know. I'm sure Mikado will be seeking input from other pilots as well.

We won't be releasing vids of those early flights at Mikado's request. Once everyone involved is happy with it's performance, Mikado will take the next step. I think about then you'll start seeing vids of the model surface from various sources, as the model will then be very close to released to the market.

It has been trying everyone's patience waiting on the model (ours included). But once the model reaches the market, it will be well proven, and should be truly ready for "consumer abuse". No consumer beta testing will be going on. Mikado doesn't work that way. Don't think they ever have.

Well, Dave, if you and Kyle want to trot up here to the San Jose area to do some tests at our "undisclosed location," I for one will step up and offer free calculus tutoring... :-)
