They fly very different. Protos with 430mm blades is quicker if that's what you want but the XX480 with Edge 473mm feels and flies like a bigger heli. You can stretch a Protos to 473mm blades but it doesn't have the same presence and the drive train is not robust enough to take the 5KW peaks that I can put through my XX480. You maybe just sport flying and if so then perhaps a stretch Protos would be a good deal for you, but I prefer my Protos with 430mm blades.

Thanks for the comparison points. My skill level is only basic sport at this point, but I want a heli that can do that fine and grow with me as I progress. I would get the Protos with the idea of getting a more advanced/bigger bird later. Or, I would get the Logo to start with and just have it alone. I can see where the Logo has a wider flight envelope.
Also, I definitely want a bird that auto's well. I am also looking at the Logo 500, which appears to actually be cheaper than the 480X. I am not sure why that should be. Anything special about the 480X? If its just the CF frame, I don't really care. I don't mind the plastic frame on the 500 at all.

There are lots of pros and cons for each heli. It mostly depends on your budget as you should factor in crash costs. If you're just learning to fly then flight time is your friend. If you can afford it then get something big and stable with a low disc loading. A logo 600SE with low head speed could get you 20 min flight times easily. It autos almost forever. Of course the crash costs will be more with the bigger helis. If your budget is limited then a Logo 500SE would be more economical.

My budget is really not that big of a concern, although a good deal is always tempting. My bigger concern is that the bigger the bird, the more dangerous. My skills are fairly low at this point, but I am in no rush to do more than I can/should. I do like the idea of all the benefits of the bigger birds now that I have flow many in the sim. I originally was just going to get a 450 and live with its limitations. Now, I definitely want something bigger, but probably a middle step like the 480/500/550.

Make no mistake, a Logo 480 will seriously hurt you if it crashes into you and a 550 could esily kill you. In some ways a bigger heli will be better. The intimidating size should make you respect it more and not get into bad habits of flying close to yourself. Flying small helis often lead to this.

The main factors for choosing to fly a small heli are cost and space. If money and space aren't concerns, then I would always choose a 550 for 6S/7S flying and 700 for 12S/14S.
But for many people, money and space are concerns at least occasionally. So the market for fully capable smaller machines remains strong.

There is another benefit of a smaller heli. The simplicity of having to charge only 1 pack. Personally I have my own Honda generator and $1K of charging equipment. I can charge 7s 5000mAh packs at the field and fly all day long. If you don't want to invest in expensive charging equipment then a smaller electric heli or even a nitro would be a better bet.

I have been flying around with a genius cp. It hits me and I don't care. I am building a 250 dfc for next step up. This should start to get rid of my bad habits. I will be ordering a 480/500/500 but only just for the fun of building initially. I will get better on my 250 for a while before flying the 500. I am fully aware of the dangers and will take put time on the 250 and sim before even hovering the 500ish. I like building as much as flying.
Sorry I hijacked this thread, I will add pictures when I do the build.

If you like building you will love the XX480. It goes together really well and the layout is very well thought out.

I hear you on that. I started with a genius CP for the ability to crash at will and not have to worry too much about safety. I just wear long sleeves and if it gets away from me and an impending collision with me is imminent, I just elbow it out of the sky. Although now I pretty much fly it around in my living room from my lazy chair and land it on my lap. I tried desperately to follow orientation pointers when first learning but simply couldn't do it and almost quit. Then I changed my approach to - move a stick and see what happens and quickly got better. Can't do that with a 500. I also don't mind that the CP is so jittery and unstable. I have to work hard to do simple things that are probably so much easier on a 500. That's why I don't mind just going up to a 250 and then the 500. Of course, I have some bad habits to unlearn, but if not for the CP, I am not sure I would have gotten anywhere.
I am still debating on which 500 to get, but the Logo I really like and I am learning more about it in these threads from all you fine folks.
