Hmmm...if the Kv is 250, head speed on 3S should be roughly 2500 rpm unloaded at full throttle. Does the motor load up that much so the rpm is only 1200?
Very neat project you guys have going here, btw! |

Isn’t the belt used on the 500 wider in width than the 450 belt? would the 500 belt fit in between the flared ends on the 450 tail pulley?

I have my Funcopter flying fine on both 3s and 4s using the Mystery Blue ESC from Hobbyking. Its supposed to be the same as the HK blue 40A ESC but is obviously working better on 3s!

just strange, i know guys using the HK blue 40a on 3s and 4s, but it only works 4s on jc500's v2 motor.
what motor are you running v1 or v2?

I might be doing the math wrong, so any corrections is welcome. 250kv equals 250rpm for every volt of electricity given…right? So on 3s the math would be 250rpm x 11.1 = 2775rpm unloaded @ 90% inefficiencies (blade loading, drag, etc) = 2497.5rpm @ 80% inefficiencies (blade loading, drag, etc) = 2220rpm Still these are just numbers and I really want to know for myself what actual rpm this motor was turning, so I strapped the DD FP450 down to a board and tached the head speed with my tachometer. I came up with a max rpm of 2190, which does put me close to 80% inefficiencies math. I also downloaded a head speed app to my phone to compare to my micro tachometer. The average head speed given on the app was 2155rpm. So I’m thinking it’s safe to say max head speed on this fixed pitch machine is at least 2150rpm. I don’t own any 4s batteries yet, so can’t test a 4s setup, but using 80% for inefficiencies, I’m definitely thinking 4s is the way to go on the cp version. Using the math above, at 80% on 4s we should be looking at a head speed around 2960rpm. I know with all the forces to be, it will be way less, but still should be a good head speed for a 450. Especially if we stretch this puppy and go with 360mm blades. ScotY my brother , it’s great to see you taking a interest in this helicopter. I see you have been in this game a lot longer than me and I’ve read some of your posts in the 450 section here on the freak, so if I’m off on my figures or my video head speed test is not quite right…please brother let me know. I’m been heavy into small fixed pitch helicopters for years, only in the last year or so have I started messing with cp helicopters and more advance stuff. So any guidance is welcome my friend. Okay, after the first crash I rebuild this amazing bird and took it out for another test hop. I have to say, as my online Buds already know, if the bird is feeling good to me, I’m quick to start whipping it around. This bird feels so…so good that I started throwing it around as hard as I could. Well… as usual when I start pushing it, it’s a little outside of my piloting ability and the bird ends up kissing mother earth a little harder then I would want. Anyway after the second crash/rebuild I decided to take it easy for awhile. JC, thanks for this wonderful machine bud. I haven’t touched a Bee since building this bad boy and I doubt I ever will.

Hey Hank and Johnny,
There really are so many variables involved, most calculations just get you in the ballpark. The biggest one is your battery voltage under load...this is complicated by the fact that the load changes. I am a simple minded person so usually use about 3.3v per cell as a rough estimate and your calculations look good. This is a really neat project you guys have going here! It would be nice to get some performance data points for a 4s setup. And see if there was any way to get the weight back down close to a stock 450...that would be amazing! I have always found it much easier to fly CP helicopters so that's my main interest and to see what you guys come up with. |

Nice flight and most excellent landing

This weekend I was going to start on the fp version of the dd 450 pro. The mailman came with the 12mm cf tube and the belts I ordered for the 360 stretch. So guess what, instead I will be going for it and put together the dd 450 pro cp360s on 4s.I based the belt size on a 405mm stretch boom. In the custom frame that works out to a mxl 505 belt. I ordered both 500t and 505t belts. The 500t is just a little to short. Here is a pic of them side by side with the 360mm blades taped on to the 325mm blades for comparison. I think this is up HH's alley.
