I would reconsider the placement/orientation of the rx and sattelite. The antenna on the main unit is completely shielded by a big sheet of (conductive) carbonfibre. The left antenna on the sattelite is the active element, the right being the ground element. This means that both of your antennas are shielded by the frame. The anatenna on the main unit is also bent, it should be straight.
I suggest you rotate both units 90 degrees clockwise, and moving the units so the antennas extend above and infront of the frame.

I was concerned that placing the satalite rx too close to the EI unit for the spark plug it would pick up interference. If that is not an issue, I could mount the satalite to the velcro on top of the EI unit or to velcro strap on the battery on the front/top tray. At least then the satalite rx should be able to pick up a signal from the front 180 degrees.

What do you think???

I'm pretty comfortable having the satalite rx mounted ontop of the battery pack. I't will most likely get more/better reception up there anyways. I'll post a picture a little later tonight.

While I have you all looking at my post, back on post 16 I posted pictures of my wiring job for the EI unit. All the power wires are tucked neatly under the lower front tray. They, however a close to the spark plug wire. Should I be concerned about this or let it go?

Rob,

By mounting the RX ontop of the battery pack, the rx is close to 4 inches away from the EI unit. Do you think the rc will pick up anything from the EI unit or the battery pack that would interfere with the signal?

i cant speak fro experience, but id imagine 4" should be enough separation. i dont think it matters as far as the battery goes, tho. i have my receiver mounted directly to my flight pack in my raptor 30 with 0 issues. the further away the better, but 4" is double whats recommended.

Thanks Rob.

I've been flying for years, but never built a heli from scratch and never flown a gasser. Should be fun!

I'm a bit of a guitar-a-holic myself. I play a Strat and Les Paul. (not at the same time. lol)

Some updated photos.
Waiting for parts to arrive. Maybe this weekend.....
By the way, I'm not planing on leaving the on/off pin there. I was looking for places to mount the pin. I'm still looking.

I'm running out of space on my Radikal to put things. About the only option I can come up with is to mount the voltage regulator to the side frame just below the RX.
What do you think??
Ted
The voltage that you set your regulator at will depend on what it is driving:

RX and MicroBeast are fine with 7.4V, but what are the voltage ratings of your servos. Your cyclic servos may even be different from your rudder servo, so that will have to be taken into consideration.

Is that battery also to be driving your EI unit? If so I believe it is made for a MAX feed of a 4.8V nicad.

So what are the V ratings of all your servos and is your one pack gong to be driving everything?

Also to consider is that some regulators generate some RF and are not recommended to be placed near an RX, Does the instructions of your RX caution you about it?

I've got S9252s (4.8v) on the cyclic, S9254 (4.8v) on the tail and s3151 (4.8v) on the throttle. I've been told the servos would be perfectly happy at 6v. As it stands, my regulator is putting out 6.02v.
The pack powering the EI is 4.8v and the pack powering the rx/Micro Beast is 7.4. I don't know why, but I had 7.4 stuck in my head. I'll see what the RX/regulator paper work says about radio interference. I didn't see anying in either manual regarding radio interference. I'll do a little more research and see if I can come up with anything.

Thanks

Ted

My 12 yr old daughter asked if she could decorate my canopy the other day. Why not??
So I showed her the windex trick and helped her work out most of the air bubbles.
I've still got quite a ways to go to finish the wiring and rx/tx set up, but I wanted to post pictures of the canopy she helped me with.

Looks good. She can do my canopy anyday. In the second pic your 450 looks like a 250 among the giants. Lol

Motor Rotor,
I asked the folks at Fromeco if I should be concerned about RF noise interfering with the RX. This was their response.

"Also to consider is that some regulators generate some RF and are not recommended to be placed near an RX, Does the instructions of your RX caution you about it? "

No it should not interfere at all. Our Regulators do not make any noise electrical RF noise, or none that would affect a 2.4 system.
Fromeco Scale Avionics LLC
I should be good to go.
Thank you for your concern and bringing this to my attention. I appreciate all the suggestions and advice I get.

Ok, so I think I've got this whole wiring thing worked out. By pull the RX battery pack out of the bottom tray and mounting it on top of the batter pack for the EI, The entire bottom tray is free.
I can mount the Regulator and RXon that bottom tray. The trick was figuring out how to gain access to the regulator, wiring and RX once I've applied the Zeal vibration tape and secured it. So here is my idea. I will get a second bottom tray, file off the mounting tabs and sand it down so that it fits inside the frames. Then I will mount the regulator and RX to the first tray using velcro straps. This way when I want to do something with the RX or servo leads all I have to do is un-strap the velcro straps and slide the tray out the rear. The only wire that I will have to disconned will be the power wire going to the RX. If I put an extra loop or two in the servo leads and power wire, I should be able to slide the tray out the back without having to to un plug everything.
This will put the batteries up front and the regulator and RX inside the frames.

I haven't mounted anything to the lower tray yet, but I have made all electrical connections and connected servos to the RX.
I have the least amount of experience with programing the radio. This is where I'm going to need the most help. Let the fun begin. My first order of business is to adjust servo travel. I powered up the rx and the servos were screaming at me!

i noticed this too. at first powerup, all the linkages(there are a lot of them) were very tight, causing some binding. id suggest sizing all the links. i put rocket city links all around, sized them correctly, and now have 0 servo noise. you dont want them so loose so as they spin freely, but loose enough that if you tap on the heli it will fall if it is horizontal. look at the ball link sizing video under heli skill skills and setup 101. in finless bobs tech room.
