500L rotor not spinning but main gear spinning....help pleas
Hi There,
Im totoally stumped and dont know what is going wrong. Just finished all the wiring/ binding, esc programming and gpro setup and went out to test my 500L dominator but have the following problem. Throttle up and motor spins, upper main gear spins, but lower main gear doesnt spin, shaft doesnt spin and rotors are not spinning, includng tail rotor. Pulled the lower gears out and dissasembled, regreased and reinstalled. ensured the locking pin at top of shaft was in place and tight. In GPRO i set the GPRO in the opposite direction to get the swashplate to do the opposite of tilting action of heli (As per manual). Also set rotation as clockwise in gpro. (i think something is not right here).. even though i have set clockwise... My observations, motor is spinning clockwise, main gear (upper) at bottom of shaft is spinning anticlockwise. But manual says rotors spin clockwise? Im confused as hell and cant figure out what ive done wrong or what is going wrong at the moment. Any help / advice appreciated ASAP |

Tried reversing cables on ESC (switched 2 cables around) and guess what.. all working..
- So much for Align quality control. red to red / blue to blue and black to back between battery and esc does not result in clockwise rotor spin. - Also GPRO setup graphics are wrong when it comes to setting up the orientation of the GPRO. I had to choose the opposite direction to get the swashplate to do the right thing. Other than that, was able to get this thing put together and im a newbie ! Off to airflield and MRCHC club for checkover and performance assistance. but fired this thing up for the first time about 30min ago and the sound of this thing blue me away. So happy !!! |

my gpro setup was correct,
defo run through the setup again to make sure you have not got something wrong. also see my thread about the tail gearbox and tail servo.

Swapping motor leads is a typical setup step. Yeah, it would be nice if the colors matched right out of the box, but if you ever put an aftermarket motor in, you're going to have to deal with that anyway. Align is cheap because their quality control is just "so-so". If you want your motor leads to match, you're either going to have to do it yourself or buy a more expensive heli.
Be real careful swapping your GPro around like that. Your swash might move in the right way, but the gyro may correct the wrong way. Like Ade Law said, check it over very carefully.

Often these days motors and ESCs don't bother with colour coding their ESC-to-motor wires. If the motor were installed the other way up, as it is in some models, the rotation would have been right when you connected colour to colour.
So, even with colour coding, you should always check the rotation direction before finalising your connections. I second the advice about double-checking your GPro's actions, since you say you've turned it around. |

I noticed the same thing with my 500L's motor spinning backward. Like Abenn is suggesting, I assumed the it was a non issue due to the top-mounted motor. Did the usual and swapped two wires to "correct".
Now you guys have me a little paranoid on the other item. I also noticed my gpro compensating the wrong direction when I would tilt the heli around. I tried picking the opposite orientation for the gpro, and now the swash tilts correctly. I thought this was okay, but will think back through my setup. I've been busy with work projects since xmas, so haven't had a chance to maiden yet. I'm pretty confident it'll be okay though. Just need to wait on free time and good weather to overlap! |

I've never set up a 3GX or GPro, so I don't really know how it works, but most other FBL units setup process has you change which way your swash tilts, whether the swash moves up or down to get positive pitch, and which way your gyro compensates, since servo layout and direction varies from model to model. I would change these parameters before picking an orientation that was different from what the actual orientation of the FBL unit is.
