Default First Heli At Last!!

Hi Guys

I have been reading and posting on this Forum for a while and have now finally got my self a proper Heli!!

For the last 18months on and off I have been using my Reflex simulator and have learn't some of the basics of hovering etc. I can hover pretty confidently although my nose in isn't very good at the moment. I can also loop and roll and do stall turns. (not very tidy I might add but getting better all the time)

In the last few months i have been flying a Lama V3 and have enjoyed it and used it to learn to improve my nose in hovering, but i am fast getting bored of its basic flying abilities.

However.

Just recently I have been very fortunate to be given a fully operational Zoom/ Shogun 400 with many upgrades including the Belt driven tail.

I know the 400 size Heli's are not the best thing to learn with but beggers cant be choosers and i am very greatful. I have bought a DX7 and AR6200 but not yet installed or set up.

The Heli has a brushless motor carbon blades GY401 and 1800 Flight Powers.

OK

What i would like to know is how to tame the little fella!

Currently it is set up for a head speed close to 3000RPM and I sh*t
myself on spool up!. (Using previous owners TX)

What i would like to know is what is the best way to bring the head speed down to a sensible level for learning and what sort of Pitch and Throttle curves should i be using for a newbie in my new DX7.

I am just about to fit a set of training gear to help prevent tip overs

Any advice to get me in the air sensibly would be most appreciated.

Sorry for the long post

Many Thanks for your time

Ben

What brushless motor do you have and how many teeth on the pinion gear? Also, what are your current throttle/pitch curves set at and have you checked your pitch range? I would advise using only normal flight mode on your tx while in the learning stage.

Congratulations, lots of fun in store

* Get yourself a couple of the flybar weights from a TRex450 and fit them just inboard of the paddles.

* Go down at least one tooth on the motor pinion, maybe two

* Start out with 20% expo on all three axes (Ail, Ele, Rud)

* Initially, fly indoors if you have somewhere suitable or only when there is less than 5km/h wind

* Make some training gear

* Follow RADD's flight school: http://www.dream-models.com/eco/flying-index.html

Good luck and enjoy

Hi Guys thank you very much

I am really looking forward to getting this bird airbourne!

Am running a 10 tooth pinion not sure if i can go down two teeth will see whats available locally. Not sure what the motor is will have to ask th eprevious owner its and inrunner in a blue can with built in cooling fins, actual motor is roughly 15-20mm in diameter.

Pitch and throttle curves are very much open to discussion as i have to prgram my new DX7 as well.

Good idea on the Trex flybar weights will see what i can get hold off will have some training gear all sorted in a couple of days.

Just need to install the AR6200 and set her up

Will keep you posted on progress hopefully within the next week will get her in the air!!

cheers

Ben

Default Sounds like this motor

Sounds like the motor made for the Shogun http://www.hobbypeople.net/gallery/165370.asp.
You can get a 9 tooth pinion that will fit the 2.3 shaft, not sure about a 8t.

Ok so its been a while since i posted as I have been working away from home.

So i have had a few problems over the last few weeks but I had the most amazing time last night flying my little Shogun!!

Got her in to a real nice super smooth stable Hover and by the 5th pack i was doing the basic forward backward and side to side hover manuvers stoping where i wanted.

Im so excited i couldnt sleep last night!! (sad for an adult hey!)

This hobby is so addictive it was almost 11pm and i just wanted to keep going.

Have a few small issues with belt tension keeps moving keeping the canopy on but over all very very pleased with my self.

Just wanted to say thanks for the help you guys have given

Cheers

Absolutely NOT sad. That's what life should be about, recapturing the ability to feel excitement, anticipation and joy with the innocence and lack of inhibition of a child and losing some of the burdens of adulthood. Enjoy, just enjoy

Thanks Guys

Was supposed to fly with some friends this morning but it was far to windy to fly the 400's it was too windy for the Hurricane 550's as well!

Bummer!

Will have to get the warehouse cleared again!

Know what you mean about being an addict, spent far too much on the credit card this week!

Will hopefully have a hot little titanium framed number in the air towards the end of next week when my parts arrive!
Will post pictures soon.

Cheers Guys

Default Shogun Update

Well its been a while since i posted so i thought i better update you guys.

My little Shogun and me have come along quite a way since my last post.

I have been getting on really well with hover training, hovering from left to right front to back and spot landing. Hovering at 45 degress left and right not quite side on yet.

Had about 10-15 flights then crashed!!

She just got away from me going towards a gate and i bottled it,just hit throttle hold and let her go in on her side.

Luckily not much damage. blades main shaft, feathering shaft and tail box.

She has since bee rebuilt into a very nicely made Titanium frame.

Had a nightmare with the elevator linkage fouling the tail belt and getting hardly any elevator movement. Im not too surprised i had problems as the conversion has been made from all sorts of parts from different kits, but i got it solved in the end.
it was a bit drastic but i eventually cut the elevator rocker in half!!
So now i only have the elevator connected to the swash on the front ball only, this way i have no belt fouling problems and plenty of movement.
The swash is still help in place with very little slop less in fact than with the original plastic elevator rocker.

If you look at the first pic you can just about see the cut down elevator rocker.

I have also added a fiberglass canopy from a HDX300 that fits quite well just need to lift the nose a bit more, and for 7quid it was a bargain!!

I have got her flying very nicely again and have Just had my first flight without the training Gear!!!!

Wow she flys so much better without the training gear on! and i thought she was nice to begin with!

Really need to start pushing myself into basic slow circuits.

need to get my home PC fixed (motherboard died) and then i can start using the Sim a bit more.

I have attached some pics

Let me know what you think

Cheers all.

Cool

Well I think the guy who gave you the heli and the Titanium frame must be a really nice bloke!
I think the photographer has a real eye for this stuff and should be employed by some glossy Heli mag!
I think the guy who got you free batteries for life must have been sent from heaven!

But seriously mate, great effort and good skills....now stop pestering the good folk on HF with your achievements and fix my lame trex for me...dems da rules ha ha ha

The Zoom 400 will fit inside a Fuse for a trex 450 noporblem but you may have trouble with the length of the tail boom.

Obvioulsy the zoom is smaller

Another consideration is the power train, Batt, ESC, Motor .

you have to make sure its upto th ejob of lifting the heavier weight.

There are some nice light plastic fusealage for the Zoom available
do a search for 400 size fuse and see what you find

Also try Darth Dark he makes lots of Fuse's for many small size heli's 450 and below

have fun
