Default How-To: Piro Flips with Video

Turn the sim down all the way and think of 'keyframes' like stringing together an animation of the helicopter a orientation as it goes through the flip.

With a full 360 piro per 180 flip, L rudder, you start down elevator stirring clockwise and will be at tail down skids in at knife edge holding nose up at the halfway point.

For a double, you'll do a full 360 piro by the halfway point, and will be nose down, skids in, knife edge starting your second stir with down elevator.

Here is a slow vid I made a while back:
Slow Piro Flips (1 min 54 sec)

...
+1 on all that.

Put simply, the rudder moves faster and the stir is faster to match the rudder.

Keyframing to get timing is the key as the heli is tumbling (you apply flip corrections at as many points as your mind can cope with )

Having good skills at tumbling and rolling on the spot helps too (as this is collective control).

You are sort of close.

Try slowing down more and doing each half of the flip separately.

Your video shows a half piro flip to inverted (tail in upright to tail in inverted with a 180 piro), and then a 1.5 piro flip, from tail in inverted to tail in upright with a 270 piro)

You have too little rotation on the first half and too much on the second. Break it down and slow it down and you'll get it soon.

I'm just barely managing full piroflips irl now (only on the mcpx BL for now) and I started it (on the sim) by doing it half by half, and then trying to do the full thing.
I've found that if you mess up in the first half and don't arrive very well inverted it generally messes up totally the second part.

I can do them pretty well upright to inverted and then inverted to upright, still have a bit of issues when doing them fully though (on the sim, on the mcpx BL it's even harder because of the electric tail motor not really helping for the constant piro speed).

I really need to work on doing other piroflips than the right rudder/front flip one I'm doing right now.
I also need to try them out on the mini, but last time I flew I wasn't ready to try anything new as there wasn't great visibility + the pucker factor from those flights being the first 3 after my previous crash.

Yes. Those are three complete single piroflips. Now SLOW DOWN. You should be able to do these like mini-rainbows, that way you are controlling the whole time. If you practice these too quickly, you will have a very hard time transferring them outside the sim, and progressing to double piroflips and other piro moves. You have the key to the move now though. It will all come with time.

Yes you have it.

Those are double pirouetting pirouetting flips.

Complete, but unfortunately poor quality. The rotor disc does not follow an even end over end flip, it spirals around as it flips.

It's enough to call a piro-flip (by all HF'ers definitions), but you can always make it better.

Very, very good. Obviously you have the move figured out. Now it is time to clean it up. I'd also suggest getting a consistent number if piros per flip. Now all you need is time.

I try and slow them down in this video, I lost a little bit of position control, but the point was to try and show the move, It has been a long road to get here, and I foresee many more hours of practice to get them solid!

Thanks Buddy , I like to have 3 Piros per Flip . I may try 2 piro but 1 is to quick and look like rushing
John.

Most of the time when the pros are flipping on the deck, they are doubles. Tight enough to look good bit enough spins to smooth out.

Ive only got the very first half of the half flips down sloppy . but I know with time and practice i will be doing doubles eventually .... and i still need more basic inverted time which should help greatly ... ( as u suggested in the first sentence )

I started learning Piro Flips, but it looks different when I do it from the instructional video.

Slow down.

You need to deconstruct the maneuver into the components of flip and piro.

by doing this for every degree of the maneuver you will end up with targets to aim for. In a 1:1 PF with left rudder flipping away from yourself you can start with at least 3 target positions. First, upright tail in. Second, disc on knife edge skids in and tail pointing straight out horizontally to the right. Third, inverted tail in.

Until you know what it should look like you'll never know if you actually did a PF or some flippy twisty looking something else entirely.
