It started out as a HK500GT, all thats left from the original kit are the main frames and the entire head assembly...with everything installed except for batteries she weighs just shy of 1600 grams.

so, are you going to maiden this thing or just keep it on your mantel.... wouldn't blame you if you used it a trophy.

Oh, I'm gonna maiden it...as much as it scares me..lol....but its a birthday present from my better half and i cant actually let the skids leave the ground under its on power until my birthday..well a week before actually..we are going to a big fly-in at a field in Statesboro GA over the memorial day weekend, and thats where the "deed" will be done. I will start "ground testing" probably tomorrow or the following day, still have a few electrical issues to work out, serial harness to make, and figuring out battery combinations and CofG...I seen your thread you started on your own stretch, and that torque tube just looks plain SWEET...love the triple bearings you installed as well, if ya dont mind, do you happen to remember the outside dimensions of the ends before ya sanded them down by chance? I'm still wondering if it could be done with the tubing from metric metals i was telling you about....i've just never actually had my hands "or calipers" on a torque tube to know the dimensions, if there stuff would work, im thinking of maybe making ready made stretch kits in either belt or torque tube varieties...make it easier on guys wanting to do it.

i believe the dimensions were 6.o down to 5.95....but the alu gets really thin and starts to flake apart. i actually did 4 and two came out good.... but i got the feel for it eventually. also the arrows ar mad of a high strength materialso the optimal solution would be to create a sleeve that has a 5.95 OD, and fits snugly over the threads of the TT ends...which screw into the stock drive shaft. Throw a little epoxy in the mix and you should be set.
come to think of it... that's a damn good idea and i might just do a second shaft with the two end that i shaved too thin.

just grabbed my digi calipers and roughly the in of the easton jax 1616 is 5.3 mm.the ends of the Stock tt after theyve bee unscrewed (reverse threads are roughly 5.1mm. if you fin a sleeve size that works, even with a bit of massaging, let me know.

so the ends of the tube, and the ends themselves are threaded, like a 600 torque tube? i was under the assumption (wrongly evidently) the ends just fit snugly in the shaft and a bolt or rivet kept them from coming apart from what i could see in pics of the part? I almost went the torque tube route but from all i could read on the matter seemed the torque tubes were more prone to vibration than a belt setup....plus i can play with the pulley ratios to get a higher tail rotor speed with a belt...

let me do some researching...sounds like what is needed is an aluminum tube 5mm inside and 6mm outside with reverse threaded 5mm threads (pitch unknown) and we have a ready made torque tube that people can just use there stock ends on...correct?

TT's are definitely more vibration prone, but also more efficient. Its hands down easier to do a belt... I look at the tube as kind of a novelty. I'm also using 550 class tail blades on mine, so gear ration is not as much of a factor. tons of ways to do a stretch. BTW, that sleeve idea, grinding the threads off the TT ends to fit a smaller diameter shaft would be the best bet if you can fin a sleeve that meets the inner and outer diameter criteria... however the ends are also hollow, so i wouldn't go beyond 1 mm of total shaving.

I built this thing as a test bed, to try out different blades...gearing..motors..flybar lengths and paddle weights...i picked up an rc-tek aluminum boom mount because you can use it for belt or torque tube..not to mention it is one sweet piece of machining...looks like ill have to ebay me a torque tube tonight so i can lay my hands on one!

will a 5.3mm outside would be better but it could work

Novelty is what its all about to me...have something no one else has..and if it works as well or BETTER than the original...plus my 450 flys FOREVER...this thing SHOULD be as well if not better than the 450 as far as flight times...not to mention my old eyes can actually SEE it when it gets more than 50' away lol

you mean for the coupling or the entire shaft? i was thinking the outside diameter of the shaft was 6mm on the original?

I was thinking along the lines of making a shaft that would accept the stock ends with no mods to them...and using stock bearings...just find the aluminum tube in the right size....and a reverse 5mm tap to make the threads...i assume you found the aluminum tubing i told ya about for your boom?

yes, the out side diameter on the stock shaft is approximately 6mm if i remember. The ends, which have a 5.1 mm diameter screw into this with reverse threads. If there is a shaft with a 5.2 to 5.3mm OD and a 5.1 to 4.9mm ID, we may be able to make an easier to create interface for the TT ends an arrow shaft.

Yeah i read that on on of the threads about the carbon biber shafts...(and i touch ALOT of grass when i take off/land) if i remember correctly, the metric metals place had their tubing in several alloys...6062. 7075... it wasnt hobby grade stuff at all, in fact the smaller tubing was for hydraulic lines...(brake lines etc) read some of the specs...withstand several thousand psi of pressure...but like i told ya...had to buy a minimum amount, but if ya spread that out to half a dozen people or so who were interested, everyone could reap benefits at a lower individual cost...what you did with an arrow shaft is just amazing to me however...was just thinking of the overall cost, once you factor in the standard bearings as opposed to metrics.etc.

any chance you could post some closeup pics of your TT ends attached to the shaft?

Ground test video!
First spool-up...all in all the test went well...no noticeable vibrations, and nothing broke or flew off! Did find a few issues tail rotor is WAY overbuilt....gonna need alot more substantial control rod between the control arm and servo, works fine static...but once that rotor hits full speed, the rod just bows. works fine when pulling, so its not an issue that cant be overcome with some more overkill...*grins* here's the link to the video
