Have you tried using a different USB port?

One that is directly connected to the main board and not on a peripheral or hub.

I think you might be jumping the gun on there being an issue. Go slow and follow the setup process instead of just trying to save random settings to it. Make sure the uninformed person who forewarned you doesn't make you jump to conclusions.

This usually means the setup software and 540 firmware is mismatched.

Try downloading the latest setup software and update the firmware on the 540.

Did you load up one of the baseline settings first and then try and change something? The reason is ask is because some don't realize you can't just plug the unit in and make changes without choosing scale, 3D basic, etc, first from the load setup drop down menu. I'm sure its something simple, so don't worry. Whoever "forewarned" you isn't credible as this unit gets very high praise from those who use it and has no history of being problematic.

First of all make sure the Skookum software version is 3.30 and firmware version is 3.31. To do this in the software click Utility then Check for updates (If you have say Skookum software version 3.30 and firmware version 3.15 that would cause this error). Once they are both up to date do as the other said, go through the setup wizards first for say Sport Setup, then try making changes. Whoever 'forewarned' you about this unit would be one of the only people who would have anything negative to say about Skookum.....

Dogga is right.

I just tried to update a sk540 with 3.15 firmware with 3.3 software and got the exact same error message you did.

Just relax and instead of jumping the gun ask for help. I consider myself the king of asking dumb questions and everytime I do I get great help in this forum.
