Nothing clocked yet, once I finish I will get it clocked. Either way, even if the aero job does nothing the higher head speed and pitch will.

I haven't gotten a speed run in since I got the new motor in, so I can't say if it's faster or not.

Maybe Ill have to make a Trex 450 Speed Thread too. People are saying nice things about mine, but a build thread, Hmm, whats to build on it, its just a flying frame, with a few from my parts on it.
Keep up the Good work man...
I use a small gps tracker for testing, rip off the case and hide it on your heli.
It isnt perfect, but you get a ballpark figure on how its all going. I checked mine while driving my car and flying next to it, No, I didnt drive my car, my son did.LOL 2-3 kmh difference between the speedo and the gps in the car and on the heli.

You should try these ou

I have a pair of these and they are awesome. Great combination of power and flight time, and no issues with cg. Price is right too!

Well, they are $30 less than ThunderPower packs, although TP does offer a killer warranty. Maybe I will try these.

I'll be ordering later today.

Status? Did you crash and burn and throw in the towel? Or too much fun flying this heli?

Nothing, just been on the back burner. I didn't fly much last season, focused more on other hobbies.

Getting back to it this season. Gotta finish up some things on my fishing kayak, then back to the "Speed Warp".

Heli is fine. Has not crashed, burned, or self destructed. Flies just like it did before the modifications... just sounds a little different.

Unfortunately, I just don't have the time or money to go all in with this project right now. The full fuse will have to wait. However, I am still planning on giving it a narrower canopy and skids. Already have the foam, glass and resin ready to go; just need to build the plug and go for it. That's the plan for this season.

Not making it to IRCHA, and there is no real racing class for this size here in the states (at least not yet), so my motivation to really push the project is low at the moment. If I had a local team-mate with as much or more fabrication experience than I have, it would make things much more manageable.

I was really intrigued by your project. I appreciate your reply also.

The concept of a two stage belt driven 450 class heli inspires me to buy a second warp kit, and see how it would work with that dual stage stretched to 420's... My first thought was that I'd need a motor with higher wattage rating ...

I'm curious what your impressions of it's power capabilities are.

I noticed you completely removed the lower bearing support from the pulley mounted on the motor. Are you concerned about wear on the motor from not being supported on the lower side anymore?

It actually is supported. I added a bearing to the actual motor mount, so while it is not supported at the extreme end of the shaft, it is still supported by a 3rd bearing.

I explained it in more detail in a previous post. I think it's on page 3.

I think you would be fine with one of the 2520 series motors with the appropriate kv rating. If a stretch is all you're after, I wouldn't bother with the two stage. All you need is a longer boom and belt, maybe some boom supports, and a smaller pinion pulley.

You would still need to modify the belt tentioner to get enough belt around a smaller pulley.

Best of luck!

What is your experience with the stock gear ratio and bogging around 3200 rpm? If it governor settings? Or replacing stock motor with upgrade?

Not to hijack the thread but do your stock motor bog at 3200 rpm headspeed?
My first compass motor, that one that had a real whine to it when spooling up and down did not bog but when swapping to the newer type can the whine was gone but the motor fealt weaker.

I never had any bogging issues, but I also never used the stock motor.

My Warp came to life with a prototype Scorpion 2520-1360. No bogging in sight.

Sounds good as i allso at the end bought a Scorpion 2520-1360 motor.
But the whiny first generation motor was still powerfull but it was its huge magnets that created the startupwhine and newer motorcan solved the problem with smaller magnets but allso made the motor loose some of its umph, at least my opinion and understanding of the issue.

I'm really turned off by the thought of having to oil bearings every time I go out to fly...

What are your thoughts on that?

Every other motor I've had did not require oiling and flew great for many flights

Did it lost some power? I noticed a increase in smoothness all around. But I could put the old can just to see the difference

After some maintenance on the heli (main shaft bearings due to change for a few months, stock were still there lol) and after trying the old can, it's not usable. The old can sits so loosely on the shaft that the can is sideways. New top bearing for the motor too, the pinion side is still stock and OK.

Maybe its the ESC - motor combo i use that makes it so but the original motor and Kontronik Jazz work just fine where the new can with the Jazz did not work so well.
I even managed to bog it so bad the ESC shut down and whent into softstart.
I switched back to the old can but it came loose from the shaft after a while and i now have the scorpion motor witch i have not flown yet due to winter and an issue with the first scorpion motor i recived from scorpion.

It's not that big of a deal. I have a fine tipped oiler that I would use here and there, but I ended up upgrading the bearings to BOCA abec7 ceramic hybrids (orange seal) after around 100 flights.

I haven't seen anything that really differentiates scorpions stock bearings from other brands at a similar price point. Scorpion just puts that oiling disclaimer in for whatever reason. Any motor with metal shielded bearings should be oiled here and there. You may not have a problem if you dont, but if you completley neglect the bearings in any motor, eventually they will fail.

You can also get a more high tech oil that will require less re-oiling. I think tri-flow makes an oil that sticks well. I use Lightning Lube because that's what BOCA sent me, but used tri-flow for yeara before that, and it also worked very well.
