Going 500 Considering getting a MSH Protos
I've been reading up on the Protos and considering getting one over a Trex 500CF or ESP. I've had my mind set on getting a Trex 500CF or ESP or even the new 450Pro but after reading up on the Protos I'm re-considering my options and I'm liking the low parts count, belt driven tail, inexspensive parts cost and the simplicity of the layout. Me personally prefer the belt driven tail over the torque tube. Does the Protos have the static discharge issue with the tail that everyone complaines about on Trex 500CF? Also does anyone know if RC Heli has ever done a review on the heli? Just looking for as much reviews on the Protos that I can find and read up on. I'm liking the Protos right now.

Yep get one you will not to disappointed. I bought the Carbon version about a month ago and have had no probs so far. Its easy to build and fly. I cant compare it to the TREX 500 as I 've never own one but Im sure someone on here has both. If you do get one i would advise to do the static mod which can be found on another post on this forum. I have done it on mine and have had no static problems what so ever and I use a DX6i with a A6200 which from what ive heard that combo doenst like static.

I haven't seen many "reviews" but Finless did build videos. Watch those to get a preview.
People claimed they had problems with static, and they probably did, but I did the static mod connecting the boom to one of the boom clamp bolts like Corrado recommended and I've not seen a single static glitch. I also wipe silicone oil on the outside of the belt every flying session. So something is working. I would recommend the AR7000 over the 6200.

I did a static mod "just because" and I've never had static issues..
The bird is super fun to fly because it's light and really fast... I mean, really fast.. RC-heli magazine has an article on the Protos but don't remember the month.. I also use the AR7000. |

I have a T-rex 500 and a Protos and I like them both. The Protos is faster if you are after speed. The T-rex is a bit more stable in wind. One is just as easy to fly as the other. Do the static mod no matter which you get and silicone the belt. I have the AR 7000 on the Trex and the AR 7100 on the Protos.

The protos is lower profile then the T500. Which I like.
I run A123's and the AUW weight is the same as the T500, and I get the same wind tolerance. Wind tolerance is all about weight. And it's always easy to add weight, but very difficult to remove. I have over 100 flights on my Protos CF, and couldn't be happier. All the T500 and Logo400 owners at the field drool over it, and really love the way it flies. The only thing I don't like is the lack of LHS support. But parts arrive within 2-3 days from most on-line shops and it's really turned out to be a non-issue for me. I also like the direct relationship we have with MSH. Corrado is the founder of MSH, and he reads all of our posts on HF, RunRyder, and RC Groups. All of our concerns and complaints are answered, and if they are valid, design changes are made and new parts are released. You don't get that with Align AFAIK. I also really appreciate the reasonable part cost. MSH's philosophy is to not use metal for bling. Metal is used where it's needed, otherwise composite plastics are used. This keeps the weight down, but also keeps the cost of parts low. No thanks to $20 metal blade grips. The popularity of the Protos is also exploding. A couple of guys picked one up in the SF bay area, and it's gaining momentum. The traffic in this forum has also increased quite a bit. Jump in and join the fray! |

My current flying
I've been into heli's since 1999 on and off and got back into it in 2006. Currently I'm just mastering my figure 8's with my Blade CP-Pro2 and sim time on my Phoenix sim. If I can fly the Blade CP-Pro2 with no issues I should be able to fly anything. I just sold my B400 and have a Trex 600ESP (still in the box) waiting until my flying skills are better and I also have a MA X-Cell Spectra-G gasser. I like the size of the 500 over a 400 or 450 and with the Protos is seems like a heli that I can grow with and into that is less exspensive to repair. Also like on my Spectra-G metal is used where it's needed.
Out of the Protos models is it better to go with the Carbon model with the motor, ESC and blades? I have an extra JR770GT gyro....would this work well with the Protos? Thanks! |

IMO most stock landing gear looks to small for the heli and usually makes the heli sit to low to the ground. I like the heli to sit a bit higher also to give the tail rotor a little more ground clearance. Also with the Protos it always aggravated me when I would have it on the bench working on it that it would rest on the tail unless there was a lipo strapped on. I guess I'm just weird.

Jetleaf,
Where did you find the 'naked' canopy?

If I would have to start all over again, I would get the Protos. If you think your missing out not getting a Trex 500, purchase a canopy and put it on the Protos

The only reason I'm considering the Trex 500 is because I'm friends with the LHS owner and he is going to give me a deal on the 500. That's how I got a deal on the 600ESP I have. Also I have to factor in who has local parts for either heli.
