15% or 30% nitro?
I see a lot of people running 15-20% nitro in their helis and was wondering other than1/2 the price was there any performance issues or any other reason one would choose 15 over 30%?

Well for me....I'm still learning....
need lots of stick time..... 15% makes more than enough power at this stage.... I can buy more 15% than 30 % per $100.... means more money for replacement parts. |

I have been running 30% heli fuel for more years then I can remember.
But that being said, a good 15% (Cool Power) or even a good 12% heli fuel (Magnum) will serve anyone very well until they really start pushing the heli. Until then the only real advantage is that 30% is not as sensitive to the needle valve and you can run it richer (cooler) for the same power. I also like to run CP 15% in my scalers because it smokes a LOT less, so it looks more scale. And because scale flying requires a lot less power then does hard 3D flying it works out very well for it. |

Thanks, it seems ( and im only guessing) That 30% vs 15% is like gas in a car 86 octaine or 93, unless your pushing it or racing use 30% or just hovering it ff flight use 15%? Would this be correct?

Try a 50/50% blend of 12.5 and 30% nitro. It will give you great power and lubrication with less smoke. My instructor runs it as well as Scott Gray, it seems to be the setup on our field for heli fuel.
Quote from Scott Gray's website. http://www.scottgrayrc.com/ "What fuel do you run for 3D? I noticed you have less smoke than some other guys. I use Cool Power 30% High-performance heli (pink color) mixed in equal parts (1:1) with Cool Power 12.5% heli (purple color). The result is about 21% nitro and multi viscosity blend of oil. The CP30 contains thin oil in high percentages, while the 12.5% heli has less quantity of oil, but it is thicker viscosity. This blend produces the SAME power as CP30%, but has less smoke and is easier to tune! Not to mention the cost is down because you can buy the less expensive 12.5% and mix with the CP30. I do not recommend the low oil blends that some manufacturers offer in order to have less smoke. The price you will pay is often rear bearings and piston rings in your engine as it is not protected enough. As a note, I use this 50/50 blend of fuel in all my helis 30 size, 50, and 90."
