Default Bigger connections than EC5 etc......

Hi guys, I have a 600 size heli, using zippy 5800mah 30c batteries. The problem im having is the the battery wire is soo dam thick.... Ive tried using EC5 connectors but the wire just wont happily fit in them. Ive had to resort to using bullets which I hate and im sure im going to run the risk of shorting a battery out before long... Are there any really deceet size connectors that I can use? Thanks guys.

Castle just came out with these http://helidirect.com/castle-creatio...ck-p-30708.hdx

If you notice where the wire goes is only a half cup so they will fit some beefy wires.

The EC5's should accommodate 10AWG wires well. I don't know about 8AWG wires.

How big are your battery wires?

Not sure exactly but id have to shave the wire down to get them even close to fitting a EC5...I recall something about 12 gauge wire... is that bigger or smaller than say 8 gauge?

The larger the AWG number, the smaller the wire. So 8AWG is larger than 10AWG.

I just checked one my older Zippy 40C 5A batteries. They have 8AWG wires. I have EC5 connectors attached. I don't recall having to shave the wires to make them fit.

Ok thanks ill take another look they were deadly tightly fit in the holes and not a great deal to solder to on the bullet end. Im after something that will give me peace of mind they aint comming off lol

One suggestion is to not be too aggressive when pre-tinning the wires, so don't add girth to the wires with solder. Another tip is that even if the wire does not go into the EC5 connector easily when it is cold, the wire should slide into the connector when the solder melts. Then just wick solder into the wires, and the connection should be solid.

From a surface area contact standpoint, in theory the close cup design of the EC5 should be better for current conduction than the open cup design of other connectors. However, I do not know if there is a practical or significant difference between the two designs for current conduction.

Thumbs up

What you can do is pretin the wire ends and then take a rotary tool(dremel)ect and a sanding drum and just go around the end of the wire till it fits with a little space for the solder works like a charm on my 5000 packs.Yogi

I found when doing my motor wires last week i got a few strands come around the outsides of the bullet once the solder had flowed. I went round them with a knife and trimmed them away.

If its not loads of wires i cant see it causing a problem, Its similar to the chap above does with the Dremel tool.

I've been using HXT 6mm gold connectors with no problems. Cheap and reliable, easy to solder. Got them from Hobbyking.

Hello Tobys550,

Suggest try XT90 if want polarity, the Polymax 6.5mm are best, both accomodate 8Guage wire on heli batteries would not use EC5 contacts are poor, for over 100A climeouts
Both are good, 6.5mm try reversing M & F for polarity protection = colour code shrink

kevin.

Hobby King now has the XT-100 for the 8+ wire.

Any reason you couldn't just use a battery adapter? If the wires and plugs on the battery side are that oversize it shouldn't make a difference.

+1

I have used battery wire extensions in the past. The Castle ESC's have not logged any worrisome Ripple Voltage past 5%.

Thanks for all your suggestions guys. I eventually went with some XT-150's these were exactly what I was looking for. The 8awg wire goes in perfectly and can get a good solder joint. The connector is sheilded which actually will spin when turned so it doesnt put strain on the solder joint Will be using these from now on for 8awg wire thanks guys
