Default Signs or Air leaks between engine and pipe?

Hi guys,

I'm running the OS powerboost pipe on my OS .55. They say to use some high temp silicone when installing the pipe. I did that the first time, but upon taking apart the pipe from the engine, I found the RTVwas kind of strange looking and I reinstalled the pipe without anything (no gasket, no RTV).

The engien seems to be running fine, but then this is my first nitro and I may be missing something.

What are the signs or air leaks in such a case, should I be applying RTV?

Thanks for the inputs guys

While in a hover, you may see drops of oil descend from the muffler / engine joint.

While on the bench after a flight, plug the exhaust and crank the motor looking "bubbles" around the joint, or again oil dripping out.

Also, when properly sealed, the motor is much more quit at an idle. However this is subjective and will take time to identify.

Personally, I'm an epoxy guy, but silicone works well also.

Great tips, I'll look for those signs.

Should I crank the engine with the starter while muffler plugged? I guess by hand it wouls be near impossible. Will it do any harm to the engine?

Thanks

As long as the motor has been run in the past so its properly lubed, it will be fine.

Another test method is to put the piston at top dead center, and blow low pressure air into the exhuast pipe via the deflector or the fuel tank pressurization hose..

I don't know how others feel, but I feel that a properly sealed motor runs smoother and is easier to tune.

For me, it usually is evident by a hanging drop of oil at the joint, but also as oil on the underside of the pipe or engine.

look for burnt oil around the joint.

Most mufflers will seal fine WITHOUT any sealer. Besides ATV can flake off and get into the combustion chamber and pull out you plug element.

I flew 3 tanks today without any sealant.

No oil leak residue around the joint whatsoever, I guess I'm good!

Man I love this bird!

Thanks all for your inputs
