batteries and flight time
Okay I believe the 450x takes a 2200 ma battery, for a flight time of 3 to 4 mins, pushed to 5 if not running hard.
Now can we step up the size of the battery to get more time in the air. Does anybody make a say 2500 or 2600 battery. Or will a 3000 fit and balance out with some counter weight?

The best way to get more flight time is to reduce rpm. Most beginners wanting more flight time are flying way too high of headspeed.
Look around and you can probably fly something in the 2600 range if you can find it. |

I have some 3S 2600mAh packs I use for one of my airplanes. I tried to put one on the 450X, but it was too long for my canopy. So that's really the issue. Yes, you can strap it to the frame, but is flying it with the canopy in place important to you? If not, by all means go buck wild.

I have a Lectron 3000mah that fits the 450x...

For most anything larger you are also going to have to get a bigger canopy.
I have Pulse 2250's and they are even a bit too big for the heli and barely fit the stock canopy.

Heck, even the stock 2200mAh batteries are a tight fit...

Tight fit is right. I just used the Velcro strap to hold my battery in. After flying it, I pulled the canopy and my battery had a big gouge in it where it rubbed on the motor. One ruined battery and a lesson learned. Put velcro on your battery to hold it in place. I thought I had plenty of space but when I put the canopy on im sure it pulled the battery into the motor.

I found a wild scorpion 2700mah battery that works, a little heavier though at 204gm rather than 175ish.
I'm also using turnigy sk3 -3600 with a 11T and 75% HS (I know it should be a 12T) and getting 6 min out of this battery. Matt |

I always laugh to myself when I read posts about flight time. It's like another 20-30 seconds really matters. Just buy another battery or two. It takes less then a minute to land and install a new battery.

I say if your heli balances and it fits under your canopy then why not... It's when you have to make compromises on balance and/or visibility when it starts to not make sense. Another option is to move up to 6S (also requires a motor change) and gear it down for lower headspeed. For instance, a 1300mAh 6S pack is roughly equivalent to a 2600mAh 3S pack. I run mine at a little more aggressive headspeed, but I'm still getting 5 minute flights on 6S.

Im flying with timer on 4 minutes and idle up 100% and flying mild 3d with stock battery and another non stock but same mah (2200).
I always have 11.38v-11.4v left in battery when I check it after flight. So 4 minutes and nice storage voltage, cant complain. |

I always laugh to myself when people are arrogant enough to put down others when they are trying to help each other out with information that makes them feel like they've achieved something.

I've been using gensace 2800's with a blade fiberglass canopy. They fit tight but still make it. I'm getting 5:30 flight times at 80% ui with stock motor / esc & sport flying. Battery is at 3.86-3.88. I could push it to 6min and I'm sure it would be fine but I'm conservative with my batteries.

If someone can get another minute flight time (per battery) out of a set number of batteries, then great. If you have 4 batteries, that's basically another battery's worth of flight time (4 mins) for only the difference in cost between a 2200 and a 2800mAh battery (maybe a buck or two) vs. a 5th battery. But like has been discussed already, the issue is that the larger batteries just won't fit without modifying the canopy, frame, etc... The best (and free!) way to increase flight times is to decrease head speed. I run at 75% head speed and 4 min timers, but I'm sure I could push it up to 5min. 75% is a really good speed for the easy sport flying I do, no need at this point to push it higher.

True. I never meant to imply it was an ideal solution and definitely wasn't considering the cost involved. I flew it with 2200mAh 3S packs for a long time and was quite happy with the flight times I was getting. My point was that you could get the equivalent of a 2600mAh 3S pack in the short stubby 1300mAh 6S form factor. I can fit a 1300mAh 6S pack under the canopy but not a 2600 mAh 3S pack because of the length. At least with the ones I've tried. As we've seen results will vary with different packs of varying dimensions.

Running at 3000 governed headspeed I get 5mins 30secs out of 2200mah packs, When I want more power I just select another flight mode (3250) and decrease timer by 1min. Best of both worlds,

If you're looking for reasons to go 6s, add this to the list for sure. Also, "just because" should always be on the list of reasons to spend obscene amounts of money on our toys... ;-) I recently spend $80 some-odd dollars on cyclic servos for what could have just been a $6 set of gears, but let's be honest, I was just looking for an excuse to get some shiny new servos.
