Default TX antenna

I have a 900mhz tx with a 3dbi rubber duck antenna (L-COM HG903RD-SM). I also use the 8dbi patch antenna for my RX. My question.. Has any one used the 5dbi rubber antenna on there TX and does it perform any better than the 3dbi. I'm looking at the L-COM HG905RD-SM and it's 17" long (wow). Any help will be appreciated.
Brian

That 5 dBi whip may be good for a base station for ground vehicles, but you probably don't want to use it on an aircraft or for an aircraft ground station. As you go up in gain with an omnidirectional antenna you flatten out the area of coverage, kind of like a "flattened doughnut." Your 3dbi dipole is fine for the aircraft, But I wouldn't go any higher. For the ground, a beam antenna like a patch is a great choice

I'm having great luck building inverted V's and dipoles for 1.28 gHz, and I use it with an 8 dBi patch on the ground.

Eugene, Aaron
Thanks for your inputs. I have looked at both 3 and 5dbi area of coverages at L-COM.com and came up with the same as Aaron.

Eugene, I have looked at both the V antennas which might be my next purchase.
