Crash a 500er heli !?!. That's the reason why I stay with the 450. Here it's much cheaper to acquire a new one.

Its good practice to replace these bolts every flying season along with other wear items like jesus bolts and mainshaft bearings if you're running very high headspeeds like that.

He crashed his 500. So now he must make a choice. Why not go 700? I don't see the wrong in that logic. The bird is a write-off according to him.
what he said...for me the 500 doesnt really come alive until I was running 2800+ , just a personal taste thing I guess....there is definitely a weakness on those bolts but I believe vibration also may have something to do with it...I NEVER overtightened those bolts, always just snug and let loctite do the job....a lot of people have never had this happened, some of us do....there are a lot of factors involved I suppose...

having seen 700's before for my taste i dont see the need to run higher HS like I do in the 500....

I don't have one, I have several Trex 500's all DFC Pro, and all set up differently. Never seen this "failure"

all running on high HS.

I have one on a 14 tooth pinion with a Tallon 90, with a Scorpion HK-3226-1600, running at 3180 for almost a year, with an average 20 to 30 flights a week...its my practice heli, and it never failed on me whatsoever..that is why it s my practice heli...reliable and cheap to fix and repair..crash it on average once or twice a week as well...

I have never ever seen or witnessed a single bolt, screw or other fail in flight on the Trex 500..nothing at all...and this tail bolt failure? never heard of it..but again..I don't spend much time reading forums..

I use RCscrewz on all the frames, but on the tail, I use the stock Align bolts and never have seen this failure..

Kind regards

Alex

Personally, I would not want a 700 as my only machine

Consider other 500 options then add a 700 for Christmas

I have a Goblin 700 and had my first crash in August: $400. It just about broke my heart.

Don't want your tail bolts to fail? Get an i2rc tail with larger bolts. $65 for a hub and tail grips.

This isn't the reason the real reason is your over tightening them

If you already have the grips, you can get him to give you just the hub for $25.

Just contacted him. Thanks for the tip. The grips are beautiful. But they would look better on an I2 hub with bigger mounting screws The tail is of course the fastest spinning object on the heli besides the motor. And I'd like to keep it intact

Thanks again.

I have had this failure before running 2500 rpm. I agree, align really needs to step up to the plate and make these bolts bigger. Yes, there are not many failures, but with people running higher and higher headspeeds on 500's, there will be bolt failures. I was more fortunate when mine failed, and somehow saved it from inverted and piroing, minor damage. It wouldnt be too hard for align to make a new hub and grips for the 500, and I am sure plenty of people would pay for it.

Having to run a super high head speed just hides poor collective management skills. I can run my heli's with a moderate or higher speed. I find myself flying more with the moderate and working on my collective management skills. Even said, I still on have my 500 governed at 2750 in idle up 2. This is mainly because I don't want to shear my bolts. If I want a higher head speed, then I will switch to the pro.

One other thing, I saw a broken blade, but saw nothing of a sheared bolt in the pictures.
