Default Dino - Question about umbrella gear..

Dino,

Lots of guys having problems with the new umbrella gear.. Too tight in the bearings, and some slop at the torque tube.. Is there a good reason not to leave the umbrella gear in place (white one) and just run the new tail output shaft? I have several torque tube heli's and have NEVER struck my blades on the ground and stripped a gear, so that's the least of my worries.. I'd prefer to just leave the white one in.. ??

Thanks!

I'd like to hear an answer to this as well. It's unnerving that Align has yet to respond to the reports of bad fit with this 'fix' for the already dangerous tail problem

My question is that there are various combinations of different materials currently in use. Why would running the white TT gear with the new tail shaft really cause an increase in the wear of the umbrella gear, and to what extent?

If the wear is only nominally increased, my vote is to accept the wear, run a normal white TT gear and change it out when necessary. Yeh, it looks kinda goofy but that doesn't take the place of a poorly fitting TT, IMO.

I flew mine todaywith the new black gears...

loads of play in the torque tube.. none of my other torque tube helis have that much play in them...

She flew well though, and the tail held no matter what..

Would love to hear a good reason why black and white gears cannot be mixed.

It probably has to be tested to know how long it would last. But, if the new black gear contains a fibre reinforcement (it appears it does), this would be very abrasive to the white, unfilled material.
That's the why...how long it will last is probably not known.

One other question. Is there a possibility that the new DFC specific TT end is slightly larger to accommodate the black gear size?

My gut feeling is this is just going to be the new material expanded more and didn't contract the same during the molding process, and Align isn't going to spend the bucks to do an EDM fabrication of a new mold. Just a guess.

I have another question in my mind, is not recommended use black gear with white gear.

Now. Why there is no problem in using front black umbrella with the autorotation gear that is white?

the reason the gear is tight is to keep what is called a interference fit but mine to where really tight i sanded the gear some and installed as for the loose fit on the tt end the white one i have fit snug that black slide right on with a tick of play and i have been running mine that way no issue so far, now as far as running white and black gears not sure how that will work out have to try it and see if the white wears out or gets play in it. The TT are the same for DFC i will send and email over and see what they have to say on this issue.

Thanks for looking into it Dino.. I'm working on fitting new umbrella gear this afternoon. Sanded it down a little bit.. Going to freeze the gear, heat the tail case and hope for the best!

Personally, I'm staying with all the white gear, from front to back. Never had a problem with them on the Nitro, or the Electric. If it ain't broke, don't fix it....
