thinking about a 500

hi everyone.
maybe all of you can help me decide on what size to get.
i already have a
trex 450 pro
trex 600 dfc
trex 700dfc

what size will fit inbetween the 450 and 600?
is the trex 550 basicaly a 600?
and im thinking about doing a scale build later on with a 500 size heli..

Yes the 550 is almost like the 600, I think they use some of the same parts.

For a long time my 500's were the best birds for me, now it's probably between my 600 and Nano.

Well I think you answered your question. If you want to do a scale (500) build someday. Then I guess a 500 it is. Lol

Yes the 550 and 600 share many parts. I love the 550..Not to big not to small. I think its perfect on 6s.... In hindsight I wish i would have skipped the 600 and went with a 700. Only becouse a 550 is all that of a 600 only better. ( just an opinion )

the only reason i was thinking of a 500 size scale is because there are more options in the 500 size fuselages.
and as far as a 550.. i dont want to buy something very simular to something i already have...
does anyone have any pics of a 500 compared to a 450 and a 600..

This is my trex 500 next too a 450,450x, 250 and the nano. All the tails are in line straight to show you the size difference.

there quite a size differance between the 450 and 500..
and i know there is a size differance between the 500 and 600
i think i have convenced myself in to getting a 500 after the holidays lol

i think a 500 would do very well for some of the areas i get to fly at..
so fo the places i find to fly are just a little to small for the 600 and 700
but i think the 500 would do very well.
and later on i could do a scale build out of it...

It depends on what you are after? To someone not flying real helis any 450 will wow them. A 500 would be thought of as a really large heli to anyone that don't fly. A 600 is thought of as a Real heli to heli pilots only because that is the size all the nitros were.

Now with FBL all those can fly the same. So if your eye sight is a problem these are equal more or less. I feel the 700+ helis are going to end up only scale ships. They are too big for most fields. The only people impressed by them are us. The general public it just scares them.

Its circular, the only push for larger helis is the tech and not really that we want them. Just like the nitros went really large and then slowly went back down to the 600. I think they would of went down to the 500, but that was the magic number where the power to weight ratio ended.

I agree with the comment that the heli's at 700 size or larger just 'scare the public'.

Even me...when the discussion heads torwards sizes 700, 800 and those insane 1/2 full size, my mind wanders towards going to the local muni airport and putting the money down on REAL heli lessons... The cost differences couldn't be THAT great once you start pushing the larger r/c heli boundries...

It it just me??

No...its not just you, At times I think of all the money I drop on this hobby and think I should have just took lessons and bought an ultra light quick silver.

All the different opinions are interesting. Here's how I see it.

For a larger heli, I like a 600. Don't need a 550 or a 700 as the 600 covers this range for me. The 700 is, in my opinion, not really that much bigger and the 600 has more agility for the power yet is big enough to see well. I have electric and nitro 600's and have no desire for anything else in this range. I've never flown an 800 and probably wouldn't be interested, unless my eyes get any worse.

For a medium size, I also have a 450 and a 500. The 450 hasn't been flown in years as the 500 covers it for me.

For tiny, the 130X.

The 130X gets the most flight time by far but my favorite to fly is the 600. The 500 is a lot of fun and pretty inexpensive to crash but it's a bit of a strain on the eyes is all. The 130X isn't so easy to see but I feel safe to fly in closer and if it does get away, it often doesn't get damaged in a crash anyway.

As a newbie I've made the jump from 130 to 500 just so I can see it ! The size of it scares me!

I love it. The size jump for me coming from a 450 was very impressive. I absolutely love my 500. By far it's my favorite Heli right now. It's a monster ( to me). I love the sound of the blades. It's pretty intimidating at first. But still it's a graceful flyer. It's way easier to see an control IMHO. So for you coming from a 130x. It's gonna be no joke!!! That's for sure. Your gonna love it. Here is a picture of the 500 next to my 250 ( with a blade SR canopy) just to show you.

Don't get me wrong! Still the general conciseness seems to be at the field, If you don't have a 600+ you don't fly helis. In fact I think these same guys hate 500's the most.

First why would you hate a size of heli you don't have? Oh could it be jealous! Also non heli people always want to see the biggest go up! The only time I have seen this not the case is when you have a scale ship. That leads me to think all they want is to see is a expencive crash! At our field the only thing that overtakes the larger helis is when I bring my Airwolf. Worst part is most my flying buddies land and want to watch, that makes me think??? lol

i have 2 reasons why i was thinking about a 500
i live in a camper and travel all over for work and sometimes finding a place to fly is difficuly. some places are small and some are huge with everything inbetween...
i have heli's frome a mcpx all the way up to a 700 except a 500.. dont get me wrong but there are many places for differant size helis and the 450 does very well for most place..but it does not do anything for the transition from (say) a smaller to a big heli..

i fly my 600 alot but i also fly the 450 alot too..in some of the bigger places a 500 would be more suited..imo
and as said before the 600 and 700 size is intimadating for someone who hasnt flowen one very much..even when i first got my 700 it was quite a jump from my 600 and was very intimadating untill you get use to it..
i just think that a 500 would suit me very well to take up the gap between the 450 and 600 size..
and second is that some day i would like to do a scale build and i think there is more options for a 500 size heli than any other size...

A 500 is the perfect step between a 450 and 600. The 550 is closer to a 600 than 500 in size. You can fly a 500 almost anywhere. The crashes are less expensive than 600 crashes.

My largest Heli is a 500. I have three kids and for that reason alone it's as big as I'm gonna go. Don't get me wrong the 500 is still dangerous but it's manageable. I have my kids trained to watch from the window inside. It's just not worth it. It's amazing how much more stable the 500 is over my 450's. on my maiden flight I thought something was wrong with it. I was expecting it to be more snappy than my 450x. I forgot the larger you go the more graceful
It flys and handles. It's such a pleasure to fly. And I agree it's easy to travel with.
