A case of the wobbles
Hey everyone,
I recently replaced a bunch of parts (flybar, blade grips, and dampeners) in my R-60, and its flying better than ever, except for one thing. when I attempt elevator tic-tocs, it wobbles like a son of a b*!@^. Could it be occuring because of a loss of headspeed? I installed the hard red dampeners and have read that at certain headspeeds it will wobble. I currently am not running a governor, so I know for a fact the headspeed drops pretty bad. I'm just wondering if splurging on a governor would help me out. Thanks!

What your describing sounds like a symptom of stiff/hard dampers. Did you grease them well before inserting them into the head?
What headspeed are you running? Low headspeeds and stiff dampening will cause the helicopter to wobble like you say. A governor could possibly be the cure however I personally would try and solve this problem before adding a governor. |

well, no, i didn't grease them...I didn't know you had to. Since that's the case, what kind of grease do you use? The last time I tached HS it was about 1850 in Idle 1, idle 2 was about 1900, but that was only hovering. I only get the wobbles when I try elevator tic-tocs and the head speed drops. I haven't noticed it with aileron tic-tocs though, or any other phase of flight.

The red 80 durometer dampers from Thunder Tiger require greasing before inserting them into the head 100%. I'm 99% sure that if you was to remove the dampers, grease them then retry them your problem will go away.
I can not remember the name of the grease which I use for my dampers but if you visit any model helicopter shop and ask for grease which is safe for dampers/rubber then that should do the trick. The grease I use on my dampers I also use on my main shaft and tail shaft (not Tri-flow). |

Anybody know what grease they're using on their dampeners? Also, how would greasing them stop the wobble? I'm not saying it won't, I'm just curious, as it was pretty easy to put them in with no grease. The Raptor 90SE manual says they may need greasing, but don't require it. It also says that with the hard dampeners, the wobble occurs around 1600RPM, which would confirm my theory of it occurring when the headspeed drops off in tic-tocs.

Tim,RC car shock oil,ATF/trans fluid ect.. works fine, heck I used bearing grease on mine before .The only reason I use it on the head for anything is to lube the spindle so it slides in the dampers, that way the spindle centers once the bolts are tight. It your caes the spindle is centered,if it wasn't the heli would wobble all the time, even in a hover. What can cause a wobble like that is something being too tight like the flybar cage, mixing arms, bolt that gos through the main gear.A loose flybar cage, tail boom supports ect...about a week ago I had some vibes in the tail and noticed the heli/head would wobble sometimes so I replaced every bearing, spindle, main shaft and dampers.Went out for a test flight and it still did the same thing so I started looking everything over on the bench. It ended up being the flybar cage, the bolt that go's through the head into the cage was loose.I put some locktite on it and she flys perfect, smooth with no wobbles.O-yea,I had to replace the bolt because it bent a little, thats how loose it was .Make sure everything is snug then pop all the head links off and make sure everything moves smooth, check all frame bolts too because they will come loose every now and then..

well, in a hover in idle 1 I'm running around 1850RPM, and have no wobbles. I only have the wobbles when trying tic-tocs.

When I was using %15 nitro fuel with 1950 HS I had the same head wobble at aileron tictocs and elevator tictoc where I always end up loosing so much HS.
I got %30 nitro fuel now and I do not get any wobbles at all because the machine keeps the rpm high. Raptor head wobbles when you loose HS that is known. I remember here somewhere S. Bell was talking about the wobble and said it was because of the design of the raptor head (splinde lenght, blade holders lenght and etc etc.). He also mentioned all other helis also have the same wobble but just at different headspeeds. Maybe we see the wobble more on the raptors because they are a little bit heavier or maybe because of the Mccpm system where all the load focuses on one particular servo (or the bell cranks between the line). Anyway, governor might solve your problem because it will keep the rpm higher, in my case I always used gov but %30 nitro solved the problem. My 90 3D flies like a champion now.

Alright, I took my head apart today and pulled out the dampers. I greased them and the spindle with rubber safe silicone grease and reinstalled them. Needless to say they went in a lot easier this time than last time without any grease. I went through the entire head and tail with my hex drivers to check if everything was tight and secure, and it was. Now I just have to get to the field to try it out!
