You can't clear the canopy. The canopy completely wraps around and fits flush against the boom.

I am hoping there is room to just mount it on the carbon side plate at the boom block of the Protos 500. My servo is boom mounted and moved a fair way back as I used a shorter tail rod as it was a bit nose heavy.

On the TDR it would seem that it's going to have to be mounted underneath the canopy.

The canopy is thin and made out of some resin or other. There is also a slit at the top of the canopy (As can be seen in Mark's photo), so I'm hoping (and am actually pretty confident) that this combination will be enough to allow the GPS RX to get a lock on quite a few satellites...

I might have to come and watch it in action! super keen to get one and use my, then crash proof, 700 instead of the simulator depending on price.

Fibreglass should be pretty much transparent to the GPS signal... I'd be very surprised if you had any issue.

Edit - just in case you don't believe me

Quote:
During World War II it was developed as a replacement for the molded plywood used in aircraft radomes (fiberglass being transparent to microwaves).
Quote:
Fiberglass is also used in the telecommunications industry for shrouding the visual appearance of antennas, due to its RF permeability and low signal attenuation properties.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiberglass

The only thing you really need to do is make sure it is being blocked by as little carbon fibre as possible, remembering that satellites can be quite low on the horizon (ie it's not looking just straight up, but should be able to "see" to the sides as well.

Now what I find really interesting is how they got the barometric altimeter to behave in the rotor wash.

The rotor wash is very strong at the tips of the blades, but very weak near the main shaft.

Rotor wash would have almost no effect on the air pressure.
I found it strange when I learnt to hang glide how my barometric altimeter saw no change in pressure with such things. But when just picking it up off the ground it would start beeping at me to signal I'm climbing in lift!

No worries mate, you will see here or on Arc when I get it and get it working.

I did a verbal order with the local distributor out here in Oz. I'm guessing most places won't list it for preorder till they have pricing which should be soon.

I wonder if Skookum will have an update option for all the SK-720's to be sent in and updated to the newer Black Box SK-720?
Would be great to get the new black one with the GPS.

Considering the hardware is completely new, best you could hope for is a modest discount on replacement. Not sure even that will happen, the gyros in the new one are expensive.

Oh well, seems a shame to have to discard the older SK-720.

Would you feel better if they called the new one an sk800 and discontinued the 720?
The new black will one day outdo itself with future technology too.
