I don't have any current pics of my T Rex 600 ESP, but I use Crash9's mounts for small cameras. I'm upgrading to a GoPro Hero HD at the moment.

If you plan on getting into FPV, please remember to apply for an amateur radio license. It'll only take a day or two of reading/studying, you'll learn some useful information, and you'll be authorized to use higher power and more frequency choices.

Here do we have my AP setup. I use the canon camera as the FPV camera here, in that way, I can see how the picture will become. I also have a Gopro camera to use as FPV platform when I film videos, but here is mine FPV heli platform I use at the moment.

Here is my extended landing gear and anti bungee from FPVpilots.com. As you can see at the picture, I use the canon point and shoot camera as FPV camera, and to take pictures with a poor homemade shutter on it. I have used a 2.4 Ghz E-sky Transmitter with the reciever, and a e-sky servo to take the pictures in the sky!



Here we got a 3S 800 Mah battery to power the 2.4Ghz e-sky reciever.


Here is all I need to go and fly FPV. From the left, 1.2 Ghz Patch antenna and 1.2 Ghz Reciever. The connectors from the glasses to the reciever is included when you buy the glasses, and both the reciever and the glasses can be charged, so you don´t need to have batteries with to power them. The reciever has 2200 mah, and the glasses have 1800 mah, if I remember right. Anyways, they have "big" batteries for their use. I can fly many FPV flights without charge the.



Here you got the Video Glasses I use. They´re just amazing!


This battery power my Tx for the downlink image. It´s a 3S 800 mah lipo battery.

With the GoPro HD, this was a expensive FPV system, BUT if you buy the GoPro HD to use it as a FPV cam, you will get the best resulotion by the FPV flyers. All my FPV electronics did cost me 820 $. You can go much cheaper than that. Because I bought a Gopro HD and the glasses. You can go with a cheaper camera, and use portable DVD player or something to get your downlink.
You got to "trick" the GoPro to get live feed out while recording, but its easy. Read the guide at Hobbywireless.com.

I plan to construct a similar configuration for FPV on my Trex 550E and, considering that I also fly at 2.4 Ghz Futaba 8FG, do you have any problems with interference Patch Antenna 1.2 GHz and 1.2 GHz Receiver?

Would a 5.8 frequency be less sensitive to interference? I'm still a beginner in FPV, so I would be grateful for your advice!

I would definitely avoid using 1.28 video with 2.4 control for two reasons.
- its possible you can get a harmonic on 2.4 gHz from the 1.2 tx, causing interference or a reduction of range.
-1.28 video will likely go further, and work better around objects than 2.4 gHz, so you could easily fly where you would loose your radio link but still have good video.

for FPV airplanes 72 mHz works very well and you can go behind trees and go several miles without issue, but we run into the same old issues with static and rf problems on helis with 72 mHz. In my opinion, the best bet if you want to run 2.4 for control is to run 5.8 for video, and here is why; You get more multipathing issues with 5.8 than 2.4, so your video will fade before your control, so you are naturally prevented from flying into an area where you would loose your link. video tends to fade and get static before you loose it altogether, giving you a chance to climb or turn around or whatever.

Using 2.4 for control with FPV there are several things to remember. You may think its the ultimate rf link for your heli, but this is not true if you don't have line of site! 2.4 gHz gets blocked by trees, buildings... even your body! so if you fly behind yourself you may only get a few hundred yards instead of your normal range!

For the ultimate rf control link for FPV, you've got to step up to a UHF control system. There are three I know of, the dragon link, Scherrer link, and EzUHF... with these you can get insane ranges and even the best video systems become the weak link

FPV Setup

This is my setup on a Trex 500 with retractable antenna. Also the next step for the RX will be an antenna tracking system. Get a piece at a time.

1) 1/8” plexiglass for base and servo arm

My first attempt at FPV. I started out with my Blade 4503D. Here are the details:

The FPV Gear:

Barometric Altimiter
1.3Ghz Video Tx with low pass filter from ReadyMadeRC (GPS would not work without the filter)
Vee antenna from ReadyMadeRC
430mAh 3s battery for Video Tx. (gives about an hour per charge)

I mounted the camera and video battery using a 1" x 12" x 1/16" carbon fiber bar.

Total weight came in at 2.2lbs and I was able to get the COG spot on. I have only taken it up for a short test flight, but it seems pretty stable.

Maidened my HK450GT today, and all I can say is WOW. It cost me $130 to build, and she hovers hands off for almost 10 seconds!! Super stable, and super smooth. My setup is minimal at this stage as I'm only testing the waters of FPV. My theory is that I'd build a sacrificial heli to crash/learn FPV on:

Todd, it flew well with the NAZA, but I've since changed it out for an Openpilot CC3D flight controller, and I like it much better. I will say there are trade offs to everything when it comes to frame choice. The flip frame is very durable, but it can be hard to tame the vibes for video footage. Something like the QAV 400 will have vibe free video, but be less durable. I am very happy with the Flip frame myself.

Awesome, thanks for the reply WNCmotard. I've been looking at the flip, the 450 and TBS discovery. I like the discovery since I could get the core and eliminate soldering(I don't mind doing it, just easier not having to). I have read a lot about the 450 and I didn't know that about the flip. Choices!

When you went with the CC3D did you give up the GPS feature? Also did you have to buy any other power supply components or flight computers?

Last question, what radio do you use to fly this?
