Default Imports

What is it with me? Every time I import something I get stung for tax. Does everyone else have a good record or not. I just got stung for about a fiver for importing some bearings from Boca. I wanted good ceramic bearings, and I knew I could trust them, so that is where I went. I know people will say, why not use xyz, but they have a good name so I ordered. I was only importing $40 worth of bearings, in a tiny envelope, which would easily fit through the letter box, but no, because I wasn't there they took it away again, and left me a ticket for a charge for tax, plus, and, which is worse, an administration fee for dealing with it.

So what's the big deal, a fiver, but $40 dollars, in an envelope, I mean ffs, leave me alone. $40 for goods, $7 for transport, £5 tax, and £8 admin. Makes my bearings expensive now, when I was thinking, not bad for ceramics for my 550.

Big sulk.

nm.

Cheers

Sutty

I feel for you, buddy! I know that your postal service likes to hook you guys, big time, for stuff you can't get on the island.
Our own postal service has been bleeding money forever now. To mail a letter now almost costs half a buck, and they are talking about shutting down Saturday delivery.

It's not just the postal service, either. I still haven't got the check for my totaled car from the insurance company. The bastards!

Not only that, but they get damn pissy with you when you go in and tell them you don't want them to deliver junk mail to you anymore!
They told me that if it wasn't for junk mail they would have gone out of business a long time ago. Made it sound like it was my American duty to ensure the land fills were full of the crap they deliver.

Mate, junk mail is brilliant!!

Every week, I get to sit down and open it all and find all the Freepost Envelopes in there. Then, I fill the Freepost envelopes from one company with all the bumph from another company.....and send them back!

I mean, if a credit card company is kind enough to share info on what they offer, with me, the least I can do is let them know about my local Chinese takeaway's special offers!

I'm with you Sutty. Imported some Dimmable LED spots from China (£90 worth), and got stung for duty and an admin fee of £15. Still £4.50 per LED plus import tax, is a hell of alot better than the £16.50 per LED they charge locally!!

I have an 89 yr old customer, who wants me to order some of these spotlights for him (not as many as I bought). But I had to warn him about the possibility of getting stung for import duty. I too feel the postal service is getting more pro-active at collecting the tax. I can only assume our hard up government is pressuring them into identifying opportunities to create more revenue for them

I do a similar thing, usually cross-posting credit card applications that I never asked for. They can re-cycle it and save me doing so. The thing about the "Freepost" envelopes is that they are pay-on-usage things, so if you just bin them there's no penalty for the company that sent them. Use them, even send them back empty and they pay!
