grounding the boom
I have had no problems with my 500, but I am considering soldering a small wire from the boom to the frame to reduce static on the tail so I dont have any brownout issues in the future. If i do this are there any possible disadvantages, and is this the correct way to do it.
Thanks in advance.

You don't need to ground the boom just the esc to the motor mount says trextuning.

Also I am running a cc phoenix 60 with a seperate bec so I don't think I will have the problem that the stock Align esc has.

I ground the booms on my helis. I followed a tip in RC Heli to attach a small wire to the boom and then to the chassis. Basically a peace of mind but makes sense to me.

What you really need to do is to connect the belt pulleys electrically. The boom and frame can be used to do this, but the plastic tail case, means an electrical connection is needed between the tail pulley and the boom.

I inlayed a 3 layer piece of foil. One end fits under the bearing. Its shaped to lay inside the case up to the front of the case where its sandwiched against the boom, which is of course sanded.
On the front I did the same thing. Under the bearing to a sanded area on the boom and sandwiched. Another piece is sandwiched in that same spot and the other end goes between the boom block and frame right over one of the screw holes. The CF is sanded there and when you insert the screw that piece gets sandwiched right against the sanded CF. Its all completely concealed. This gave me continuity from the front of the CF frame to the tail hub. |

Here is a way to connect the two belt pulley:
You must sand hard both end of the tail boom to remove the coating and the edge of the boom end to keep from cutting the wire in the boom block. At the end You can check the connection between the tail shaft and the front pulley with a voltmeter. Regards Gabor Last edited by fugega; 01-29-2008 at 09:40 AM.. Reason: spell |

This picture has been a long time coming.
So do you do this AND also connect from neutral bec wire to frame?? OR do one?

Yes, the neutral also connected to the frame (at the motor mount).

Am i right in thinking if using a metal tail box just the wire at the front needs to be done
People are earthing the neg on the esc to the motor mount, what about external bec? If both the lives and the negs on the esc and bec are connected at a join then, via the lipo wire then both units will be ground to the motor mount is that ok And is it advisable to ground the boom to the motor mount aswell, or is anywhere on the frame ok |

Now I'm using the metal tailbox too and because the boom and the tailcase anodized You have to sand the end of the boom and the inside of the case where the boom stops.
At the end check the connection with voltmeter just to be sure. I think inside the Align ESC the battery negative connected with the BEC negative. My frame connected to the battery negative pole. Actually for keep the belt from static charge You don't have to connect the tail system to the frame or the battery just the two pulley to each other, but it won't hurt. |

So you are saying:-
Connect boom, both ends to front and back pulley to sort static. optional connect ALSO to frame? optional connect ALSO from battery NEG to frame?

So you have TWO different earth points on the side of your frame.
1 from belt/pulley and boom to frame 2 from BEC NEG to frame ?

What about the fibreglass frame version, the frame is an insulator so doesn't conduct - do you earth bond to the motor mount?
