Default Trex 450L - Learning to Fly - Stripping Tail Boom Mount Umbrella gear

Hi, finally got my Heli all setup and ready to fly (many thanks to this very forum).

Now as I learn to fly on two sorties I have stripped the umbrella gear inside the Tail Boom Mount.

Someone told me they believe it's due to hard landings. I want to confirm if that is what would cause this? Admittedly I have landed a little hard but none of the landings seemed that aggressive as to cause a gear to strip.

Also is the a common part to strip when learning to fly?

Thanks,

This would be best asked in the 450 forum rather than here, the folks there will know all about 450L problems. The mods on helifreak are pretty good at moving messages, I'll see if they can move this over to get a reply for you.

I've had hard landings cause teeth damage on the torque tube gears, even when the landing didn't seem all that hard. It may be that the tail boom and torque tube flex enough if you bang the heli down on the skids that the gear teeth get momentarily misaligned. Maybe. In any case, yeah, I've had that happen to me as well, and not just on my 450.

The 450L has 68mm tail blades which are practically the same length as the tail fin so if your blades touch the ground it's most likely to strip the gears, I land nose down and hit throttle hold before the tail touches. Land on grass this might help you. Or people extend the tail fin or put trex 500 landing gear on.

Everyone flying a Trex 450 torquetube has spare gears at hand. Best thing to minimize it is to raise the tail by adding a spacer between the rear skid and frame. And hit hold BEFORE you touch the ground.
Also check for proper mesh between the TT gears.
