Coolice,
I just tried your 3G settings for my 550E, reducing the Rudder Stop gain to 58 has eliminated the tail hunting at hover, thanks for the tip! All my other settings are exactly the ones in your post.

I have a new problem with your settings that I didn't see using Leon's: in a fast forward flip the heli wobbles like mad DURING the flip - the stop is nice and bobble free but during the flip it's like it's drunk with fast lateral wobbles. What do I need to tweak to eliminate it?

Hi Trent.

Brilliant news mate, yeah reducing the rudder lock gain makes a big improvement to the slow wag seen in the hover. While the models fly ok with this slow wag you soon want to get rid of it and this is the fix as seen now by many.

The woble during the actual flip I've not seen myself, but you say it only wobbles during the flip but stops well? Reading that I would say that the elevator gain (assuming you're refering to an elevator flip) is set too high, hence the elevator gyro is trying to fight the models tumble in the elevator axis and hence causing an almost hunting like situation.

On all my models the elevator gain pot on the 3G unit tracks around 10~15% lower than the gain value I run on the aileron, I don't have a proper explanation as to why but assume it because of the increased mass hanging out a long way out back which is the tail rotor assembly. This lump of weight will obviously effect the way the elevator gyro behaves in starting & stopping the fuselage of the model flipping, there is more weight to move initially and then stop again.

On my 550 I am running the gain pots at;

Aileron; 45%
Elevator; 38%

You can try this adjustment using the pots of take off specific gain increments using the 3G PC Link which will be more accurate.

Out of interest where is you're 3G sensor mounted? Mine is on the anitrotation bracket using one piece of Align tape and a velcro strap lightly over the top to stop the sensor wobbling on the foam in hard tic-toc's.
Other differences we may have is main blades, I am running EDGE 523's and head dampers as I have fitted KBDD hard orange ones.

Hey Ian;
Here is where I ended up, it's FANTASTIC now the best 3G settings I've had to date:

Aileron:
Control: 81
Tot gain: 70
Roll Lock: 50
Roll Stop: 5
EXP:0

Elevator:
Contol:81
Tot gain:70
Lock gain: 50
Ele stop gain:5
EXP:0

Rudder:
Control:70
Tot gain:60
lock gain:58
Stop gain: 4
Piro comp:50

Misc:
Hiller: 50
Bell: 70
Collective Comp:50
Swash ret: 65
Cyc pitch:50
Piro Optim: 50
Cyc Pitch motion: INH or grayed out

My mechanical set up is exactly that of Mickey Johnston's in the setup article in the January 2011 issue of RC Heli with the exception of the doubled frames; I installed additonal frame rods(?) under the main gear and up front under the batt tray (the only unused frame holes in the original Align frame)

The settings are a mix of recommendations by Luke, Mickey and you.

I have mounted the gyro to the standard rx pad, should I move it to the bottom plate under the main shaft prior flying? Or just try it where it is? Cheer

Cant hurt to try it where it currently sits...that being said I think most people have it mounted on the bottom plate - that's where I have mine on my 550E and 450 Sport and both fly very well esp. if you load Coolice's settings as a starting point!

Hey.

I would suggest the same as Blunight has and that is give my settings a go with the sensor where it currently is mounted. I have mine on the anti rotation bracket, I have not tried on the lower plate as yet but have on the boom block and didn't find any advantage, more of a disadvantage so popped it back on the anti rotation bracket.

Thanks for the feedback on the settings buddy and the recommendation to try them.

Ian:

I finally got around to getting my 450 Sport out in the wide open to see how fast forward flight went - I must say my 450 is now better tuned than my 550 - the tendency to porous or act weird at high speed is non existent!
I'm using cheap "3D" blades that weigh 26g each
My pitch is set to 10 deg cyc
13 deg collective
HS5065 cyc servos
Futaba 9257 tail servo

This thing flips as fast as my 550e VERY FUN!!

Here are my settings:
Trex 450 3G settings 06/10/2011

Ail: 85
Tot gain:90
lock:45
Roll Stop:10
Exp:0 (I use my radio for this setting)

Ele:85
Tot gain: 90
Lock:45
Stop gain:15
Exp:0 ( I use my radio for this setting)

Rud Cont:70
Tot Gain:70
Lock: 75
Stop: 0
Piro:50

Hiller:60
Bell:60
Collective:85
Swash Ret: 60
Cyc pitch: 37
Piro Opt: 50
Grayed out

Let me know what you think.

Hey Buddy.

Ah cool, glad to hear your 450 Sports flying well.

I've just compared the settings you're using to the ones I've posted and there is only a few areas where a little extra percentage has been added to various sliders, most notably is the control rate where you are using 85% and I'm lower set to 70%. Hiller and Bell rate alter by 5%.

I'm now flying the Align 325 3G main blades on my 450 PRO, not a perfect fix still for the elevator porpoising but a nice flying blade I feel. I'm possibly going to try a 3GX on my 450 PRO next so I can start working out some nice settings for this unit as well.

I'm currently trialling some slightly modified 550 3G settings, I have reduced the roll & elevator stop gains from the 20's to 5 to stop a wobble on aggressive tic-tocs I have been seeing. So far so good, but I will test them some more before I post them for all to use.

I've just seen your own 550 settings you have reduced the stop gains down to 5 which is what I am currently trying.

Hey Coolice

Thought I would just let you know that the 500 3G was in the air for the very first time yesterday!
So far all good just normal flying at the moment just so I get used to her, I did give it a few pitch pumps and the tail held real good!

Atm I am running stock settings in the the software as it is a good starting point, as my flying gets more exciting I may need to look at tweaking etc.

Here are my current settings so far ( more radio setup than 3G)

Settings that I have atm are so t hat I get used to her, please feel free to advise me if anything you see just doesn't look right.

Dual rates are all on 100%
Expo all at 20%

Throttle curve Normal
0 80 80 80 80
Stunt 1
90 90 90 90 90

Swash MIx

Ail +60
Ele-60
Pit -45

Gyro 66%

PItch curve Normal
30 39 50 75 100
Stunt
0 24 50 75 100

Both 3G pods are at 50%
3G settings are at default out of the box.

P.S I did notice that while inputting cyclic (rudder) it hits its end point but on the TX I can still move the stick either left or right a little more but obviously mechanically it cannot, not sure if causes the servo to bind?

It just feel weird that you have more stick movement but it actually do anything.

Do I need to adjust the travel points? Or is this the way large birds operate?

ANy suggestions are MOST welcome

Hey buddy.

No sorry, not yet. I've only just updated my 450 and 550, but as yet not tested them.
I plan on dealing with these models first, to figure out what software changes will be needed to get the best out of the models. Then I'll update my 700E as its currently flying very well on V2.1 so want to be sure I can get to a good setup quickly to carry on enjoying it :-)

OK Great, look forward to seeing what you find.

For now then I'll just need to reduce some gain settings to get the heli flyable.

My 700E is now flying so bad.

I've gone back to v2.1 with Coolice's 550 settings for the time being on my 600n.The heli's flying very well but i'm using a Sl720 on the tail so dont see any tail issues.

I am still tinkering with 3.0 but if I can't get it where I am happy, I would like to go back to 2.1 but don't know how to downgrade. Any help will be appreciated.

Go to the website where you downloaded V3 and download V2.1 and install.

Default Current, Up To Date 3G Settings Files

Hey All.

Attached are my current 3G settings files to date.

I did try V3 on my 450 PRO & 550E 3G'd models, however my 450 now has a 3GX installed and my 550E I have reverted back to V2.1 firmware as I feel it is better overall than V3. Although V3 improved the tail rotor feel.

Additionally, I have since tried my 550E settings on a Trex 700E 3G'd running V2.1 and they made a major improvement to the flight performance and feel of the model for the flier, Pete Ayriss another Robbe sponsored flier in the UK.
