Geared tail motor
Any idea why they use a geared tail motor instead of a direct drive motor? The price difference would be at most $3~4.

Perhaps at least partly because the geared drive is more robust. Any impacts on the tail rotor are borne by it's shaft, whereas on a DD tail set up these forces are borne by the motor itself.
