I really hope you get someone to shoot this flying when alls said and done. Its coming together so nicely. Its going to be too cold out by the time you finish though.
Loving the pc fan on top of the scorpion motor...how did you attach that? Is the scorp shaft longer than normal? Is there a plastic hub in there to attach on the motor or something? Clever night...very clever indeed. I wonder if a housing around the fan would be better...wouldnt look good covering the motor though. I wonder what the metal maingear's meshing sound will sound like. Man, you should make the tail a chain drive. ALL metal drivetrain.

Night, your creations are always sights to behold. I do have a "noob" question. My limited understanding of mechanics tells me that metal-on-metal produces more noise as a by-product than metal-on-plastic or plastic-on-plastic. Will noise level be a factor of consideration in this design?

Actually...the guy that machined the gear posted videos of the gear in action..and it was actually quieter than a stock setup!

All the questions will be answered soon enough (hopefully)..

Unfortunately today was put to getting all the summer and fall goods put away for the season, and yard clean up.

Will be continuing the assembly during the week after work so with any luck it should be ready to maiden by next weekend

Night, those "pool noodles" are becoming your trademark. Have you considered have some made up with a personalized logo of some sort?

Here is the first stage transmission for your 1000 Night...4:1 reduction...still need to shave some off of the lower pulley and make some brass washers to go between the pulley and the bearings...but it's getting there...

Trail fit of the main gear, pinion and belt....first hurdle encountered...looks like it will require an XL58 belt..maybe even a 59...grrrrrrrr a 57 put the output shaft dead center of the motor mount, but the flange on the pinion pulley rubs the auto gear.. well least my math was right...just didnt take the flange into account...

on a brighter note...the transmission primary reduction unit ran flawlessly in tests...held 7000 RPM for almost 30 minutes....

Troy,
Would turning down the belt guides on the motor pulley give enough clearance to the auto gear?

Not near as much as adding one tooth to the belt *grins* Its no biggie...i have to make another belt order soon anyhow..ill just add it to the list....and with yours being top mounted, it may not matter anyhow. ill send both belts and you use the one you see fit. In the meantime i can make up a dummy spacer to replace the auto gear and continue testing, i wont be using an auto gear on my personal version anyhow, the frames i cut dropped the tail boom even with the auto gear and im gonna run a belt drive on it as well and do away with the counter gear assy..much like a raptor does...

This would be a direct measurement, so you wouldn't have to consider what losses might be occurring with a belt or TT. It should put one at least in the ballpark for what power would be required in direct drive tail.
You could also strap it down hard, with the tail drive removed, and do a power measurement. This would give you main blades only measurement. Then strap it to the turn table with the tail drive installed, and measure the power with the trail doing the work of holding the yaw. Measure the power. Now you have the number you're looking for.

Well, it would be a shame to have all that belt drive goodness, and then one ugly gear still making lots of noise and vibration...
