Default Which governor is better

So I'm trying to get back into flying it's been a couple years. I picked up a second hand trex 600 efl. I have a sk 540 fbl unit. And a cc Phoenix ice 80 v2 Esc. I never messed with the governor before. Which one has a better governor to use. Any tips would be appreciated.

You pay for the kontronik gov. In general, fbl gov is better as it's proactive as opposed to esc based govs that are reactive.

I wouldn't say "best in the World" but I would say easiest.
To setup a new heli... all the pitch setting, cyclic and then to get to the ESC. With my Kosmik, I set mode 1 ( reset ) mode 4 ( heli ) then set my BEC voltage and I'm done. Mr Mel's HS calc tells me what throttle % give my desired HS and its been really close.
It is the best ESC gov I would say. But probably not best in the world.

Kontronik ESC is the best built in gov in the world. But you can do better by using a number of different ESC units running the FBL units gov with RPM sensor. NOTHING beats the simplicity of the Kontronik gov... basically 2 stick movements as dcope17 said.

Agreed. Old Jives sucked, Jive Pro and Kosmik are pretty damn good though.

Setting up the gov for any of the FBL units that use a configuration program, vbar, brain etc is very easy as well. Just punch in the headspeed you want and your gear ratio and you're golden.

It used to be a bit more tricky when you needed to rig up your own RPM sensor but now it seems like most ESC's are coming with an aux RPM out plug which makes everything clean and easy. Personally I'm a fan of YGE ESC + Brain gov. Put the YGE into ext gov mode with the sticks and then just punch the right numbers into the brain and you're good to go.

Kontronik governor does not solely rely on rpm, it senses the increase amperage and timing shift that occurs naturally as motor gets loaded and then dynamically adjusts the throttle opening, it works faster and better than any other rpm based governor, even FBL governors, which must still sense a drop in rpm before reacting.

This is exactly the reason why Kontronik does not support external governors.

Then why does an fbl gov add power when adding pitch? You can see this most evidently when spinning up with no blades on. An esc based gov does not do this.

How would it know you increase collective? It doesn't. It only increases power after the motor rpm has already drooped.

The FBL gov adds power to precompensate the increased power demand of the rotor. If you set it up right, you'll literally see NO bog at all. In fact, my 690's gov is set up so well, I can disable the actual governor and just fly with the precomps and the rpm will fluctuate just marginally, it is indeed very flyable and better than a lot of ESC governors I've tested

It's hard to measure which gov is the best, holding RPM is of course important but it's not the only metric to use, keeping artifacts away is just as important for example, and you can't see this in a log.

I have not flown a recent Kontronik gov but the older gov was very aggressive and had tail artifacts, an FBL governor gives the throttle a little bit smoother (since it has precomp) and could possibly keep the artifacts away for longer, at least the theory is sound.

Either way, I think both FBL and Kontronik governor are good enough for most pilots.

With VBar Control you are spoiled and dial in the exakt headspeed you want, I wouldn't want to lose that though.

The ESC is going to 'know' you increased the collective first because the receivers are hooked to that.... then it sends the message on to the motor to speed up.

I always hate "better" threads. What is best for me, probably isn't best for you. I think the term is subjective myself. Fly what you like, and if you like it and no one else does. They can jump in lake.
