Help & advice please
Guys - I had a crunch with my R50 Titan the other day & trashed the GF canopy.
I have bought a replacement glassfibre off ebay that has some damage (but was very cheap) with a view to re-furbishing it. My experience with painting is zero. So far, after inspection, I have found some damage - a weird (but small) hole that looks burned, some scorching from an obviously very hot muffler and some damage to the CF look 'window'. I have taken some wet & dry sand paper to the CF look window to remove the clear coat, to see what it's like underneath - some of the clearcoat was missing anyway. What is the best route from here please? I can post some photos later if that would help. I have some GF tape and resin to repair places, but just wondering what the best approach will be. Do I need to take special precautions when sanding, for example? Thanks Keith

are you wanting to spot repair the canopy, or completely repaint it?
my advice would be to repaint the entire thing in an original design, spot repair is an art...

Thanks - preferably spot repair.
The main problem area is the 'cf look-alike' window. Other bits will touch up a treat. I am guessing to strengthen the weakened areas with some GF tape & resin (on the inside) and then mix some resin with 'microballons' to make a smooth filler. Fill the indented or damage areas and then sand it smooth with various grades ending with fine. Mask off the ok bits & spray with undercoat, then paint & finally clearcoat - just on the areas that are involved. I intend to spray that cf look-alike a really bright colour, like yellow or orange to assist with visibility. Am I barking up the right tree - or just barking? Cheers Keith

I'm thinking this could end in tears, and alot of sanding/polishing. I'd just repair the bad bits, re-prime, re-basecoat, then re-clear. It will probably take less time and you'd get a custom job. Just my thoughts.............

Thanks buckers - a holiday intervened but I got started this week.
I repaired the damaged areas with gf tape & resin and stripped all the gel coat off the 'windshield' area. I actually also gave that area a good coat of resin which once hardened, sanded up a treat. I then put 4 coats of self-etching primer and after 24 hours or so, six coats of top coat, which is just now hardening off. I shall then give the painted area a very light rub with 420 grit paper and spray some clear coat afterwards to seal everything in from nitro attack! I'm fairly chuffed with the result so far - we'll see how long it lasts though This has given me the encouragement & experience to consider repairing the original canopy I trashed - it's worse than this one was, but hey, there's nothing to lose! Keith

That's the 3D canopy I think, the one with the big switch hole in the side?
Looking good. Keep at it. |

well , if your a painter, spot repair isnt that bad , the trick is to do the whole area that needs fixing.Hence , i would pinstripe the window line over , then redo the entire windshield with the carbon fiber look.
preprep is all sticker are removed from entire cano, lightly wetsand entire canopy. after the window is redone , re-clear the entire canopy. guess its not so much a spot repair at that point , but only "paint" was repaired, its hard to feather clear on such a small scale , easier to just reclear entirly. more cost effective to jsut put a big sticker over the effected area as a bandaid.
