Default Kosmik in 700 - Using the Diabolo Kosmik Mount!

I just finished a diabolo build, using a Kosmic 160. The Diabolo, like the Logo 700 needs a slight modification in order to best mount a Kosmik ESC. An upgrade mount can be purchased that makes this job much easier.

This mount is available as an upgrade (Peakaircraft.com)

this mount is available here

http://www.peakaircraft.com/Products...ch=d135&zhcb=1

First job was to take out a dremel and a sanding block and remove the curvature of the area of the frame sides where the Kosmic is going to be mounted.

Then I taped the mount in place and drilled 4 holes, and installed the mount using flat head bolts, and with the button head bolts that will later secure the ESC already in place.

Note that the frame sides are now running in a straight line from end to end of the Diabolo mount. This makes it much easier to install the mount, and, more importantly, improves clearance between canopy and ESC. I left about 3mm all the way around the flat panel where the YGE ESC normally mounts. I used button head bolts to attach the ESC to the mount, so leaving 3mm all the way around allowed the bolt heads to clear the flat ESC mounting panel.

View from underneath, inside the frame sides

the top panel between the motor and the ESC panel was ground also back to match the frame sides

finished! The ESC bolts were intentionally left a bit long so I could grab them with a pair of needle nose pliers so I could tighten the nuts. There is no way to hold the ESC bolts once the Diabolo mount is secured to the 700 frame. I used blue locktite on the nuts because using a nylock nut would not work so well since they don't just 'spin on' without some way to keep the bolt from turning. Also: Be sure to use a big enough washer or the it will disappear into the grommet as the nut is tightened.

The whole job took less than 20 minutes.

Looks great, and even on the 700 the Kosmik looks big!

I copied a friend and cut a strip of the foam packaging from his Goblin.

I highly recommend this solution. I thought about how to get it on there a while, then used the mount on a diabolo and decided to give it a go,

. Aside from grinding the frame sides under the mount flat it was a snap.

I laid in two stacked metal rulers on the inside of the frame sides and scored lines with an awl, and started with a dremel cut off wheel.

to finish it off really flat, Get some permagrit files or use a sanding block with coarse grit emery paper ( black 60 grade sandpaper)

Wear a mask, and I did the grinding with a vacuum hose real near the work. CF dust is bad for you.

Taking the frame sides down provided almost 3/16" to 1/4 " clearance between canopy and kosmic. Otherwise you are going to be REALLY close, possibly touching.

I was going to machine some delrin for the mounts, but as you mentioned the clearance is an issue. I ordered the mount from Peak yesterday!

I always sand CF under running water or in a tub of water. It just isn't worth the risk of breathing in the dust and water seems to be the best way to cut the dust. If I must do something while it is attached to the frame, then I cover all essential components and bearings with tape and run the vacuum as close as possible as you described.

Ok so this looks like the obvious way to mount the Kosmik.
So it 100% doesn't rub on the canopy or anything??
How do I know how much to dremel off the convex bit of the frame?

It clears the canopy, but with not a bit to spare.

Take a close look at the last photo in the series in my post. Look at the tabs extending from this plate into the frame sides sides... You will be able to make yours look like that photo, using the thickness of those tabs in the photo as a guide.

What I did is i laid a metal ruler (about 1/8 inch thick) flat on the ESC mounting plate and scored a line ( with a sharomscribe) on the inside of the sides and started grinding

The flat ruler served as a guide for the scribe, and was just thick enough to get the scribed line where I wanted it.

I used a Dremel tool with a cut off wheel ( go slow with this, or a slip will mar your nice work) and finished with coarse emery cloth wrapped around a a sanding block

If yours doesn't clear the canopy, remove more cf from those edges to get the ESC farther from the canopy. I could get almost 1/8 inch more clearance but didn't need to

Cool thanks!

I've ordered the part and it should arrive tomorrow.....if not it's going to be another long weekend where I'm not flying haha

I've used the dremel to grind that part of the frame down and will use a file to finish before installing the kosmik. I took the mounting plate out, stuck it into the slots on the outside and then used a ruler to make a line as a guide.....that way it was easier to see.

When I taped the esc into position just to check for clearance is seemed like I needed to have it a little further forward than yours...I'll post up a pic of how it works out anyway.

Thanks for your info, yours is by far the best solution I've found!
