Default ESC choice for Lepton

Hi, everyone. I'm hoping your collective experience will help me choose the right ESC for my on the way Lepton kit.

I am thinking of getting the Hyperion HS3026 880KV motor and running 4S 3700mAh batteries. Would you recommend the Hacker X55 Pro ESC or the Hyperion Atlas 60A (linear BEC)? From what I've read, the Hacker seems to be well-liked but it is older. The Hyperion is newer, but it is a linear BEC (well, the one in my price range).

I'm mainly going to taking it easy and learning on the chopper, no 3D until I'm a better pilot. Thanks in advance.

I have a CC 80 ESC and a Scorpion motor in mine. You might want to consider a Castle Ice.

Avoid the CC Ice series unless you plan to run an external BEC. The built in BEC is borderline on this size of helicopter.

It might help if we knew what you consider your price range to be.

Cost no object, I highly recommend the Kontronik Koby 70. I have it in my Lepton right now with the Hyperion 3026-880 on 5s and am quite happy with it.

Thanks for the replies. I'm looking to stay south of $100 if I can. Is there any reason why the hacker X55 Pro would be a bad idea? I read up some more on the Hyperion and it seams that 4S is too much for the linear BCM.

Run a BEC regardless.

I'm building a Lepton with the same Hyperion 3026-880kv but will run 6S and YGE80 with built in BEC.

Depending on what headspeed you want to run, you may have difficulties with gearing using that combo.

I'm running 5s with a 19T on that motor for ~2800rpm governed by a Koby 70. I have an 18T I may swap in at some point but I haven't cut it to fit yet.

I run a Kontronik Jive 80+LV and it works beautifullly on my 4S setup. I love the 12 second slow spin up!

Cheers,
Bob.

I'm using the same motor you are considering on both of mine with CC ICE 75A ESCs and using the built in BEC. Never had a problem. I'm running 4S, 3700mAh packs.

I bought 15,16, and 17T pinions to try out.
Wanna run the head speed below 3000rpm.

I ran the ICE75 for a while and had nothing but problems with it. The gov didn't work and the BEC caused brownouts galore.

Maybe you got a bad one. I have close to 100 flights on mine and have been using the gov. function for about 70+ of those. Have not had any issues with it. It is mounted underneath just in front of the front skid brace so it gets plenty of cooling.

I ordered an ICE75. I'd love to try out the Kontronik, but it's not in the budget right now. Thanks for the suggestions.

Edit:
I just realized the YGE 60 is in my price range as well. I'm putting the ICE on ice, and I'll try out the YGE.

Too bad i'm late. The Hacker X55 is a very good esc for his price. JR is supplying the 70A version with his Super Voyager E/Vibe 500 in Japan. 55A is plenty enough. Bec is reliable. An ICE 50 would have been powerfull enough. The 75 is very heavy.

Without mods you won't be able to use below 18T.

I just took my second Lepton out the other day with an ICE 75 using the internal BEC. Cyclic servos and motor are the same as my other one but I was trying a std. size tail servo. Lost all power twice in less than two minutes. So now I see what everyone is saying about the BEC being marginal. Time for an external BEC.

As good as the internal BEC is, it is not good enough.
