Default Stock motor collar

I recently had to disassemble the stock motor to clean it out and replace the bearings. I had to slide the shaft collar off to do this, and now I need to replace it, but I'm unsure how flush the thing used to be against the motor base. If I push it all the way down the motor spins freely but Im worried the collar will grind against the inside of the radial bearing. On the other hand, if I leave some room there is obviously some play on the shaft. What is the standard practice here?

Thanks!

I have mine all the way against the bearing, then a washer to take up a small gap, then the pinion up against that to keep everything in place.

You can hold it gently with a plier and pull it out, doesnt need a harbor press for this.
