Got "bitten" by my Forza 450
Ok guys, I am posting this to remind everyone (and myself) how easy it is to make STUPID mistakes when setting up a heli. Mind you, this is my first accident in four years, and even though I have been very careful to avoid accidents when working on the deck, today I managed to get myself into some painful situation.
Long story short, I wanted to reset the Vortex settings on my Forza and forgot to disconnect the motor. To make things more "interesting" my CC ESC was on multirotor mode since the Vortex was doing the governing. As soon as I hit the confirm factory reset button, the heli spooled up at full speed and bit me good on my right arm. Heli chicken danced on my desk for few seconds and finally shut down. It did not matter my radio was on TH, normal mode, zero throttle. As you can imagine, the wife heard the whole noise and cursing, and she came right over to see WTH I got into. I got to hear my well deserved safety sermon, and she immediately rushed me to the walking clinic. Doc said I got lucky and took care of my elbow with Derma Bond ( no stitches ) I can humble say that today I earned my badge of stupidity, learned my lesson, and thanked the Lord for keeping me safe. Be careful out there guys! Back of my right arm - that Forza can bite you pretty good if you ain't careful ! Forearm and bicep slightly scratched by my Forza's tail - it stung like crazy though!

Ouch!
I hate seeing things like that. I know it's not always possible with <500 size helis, but this is the reason why I'm not comfortable with BECs, or any system where I need to plug in a flight pack when doing bench work. Even if the motor is difficult to access, removing the blades could be a good safety precaution for doing any work where the ESC is being powered up.

Pro tip: Chances are, you have some old align BEC lying around that came with a combo but is actually insufficient. I just plug in a 3S LiPo and hook up the BEC to a free port on any electronics. Just use a Y-splitter cable on one of the ports of the heli (if there's a free port, a short extension will do too) and place the female end somewhere convenient. Then you can just connect a cheap BEC to power all the electronics without the ESC getting any power. I guess some built-in BECs don't like that kind of bypass surgery though.

Its always painful when the heli bites. Glade you got away with a small injury on the hand.
Same thing exactly happened to me when I first moved from a NanoCPX to a trex500. Didn't disconnect motor wires and things got really ugly. Stay safe and lesson learned. |

Good thing I got an align soft start helicopter ESC day 1.
Stupid using any other ESC.

that ESC does have soft start. however, when you use the Spartan to govern, it (the Spartan) requires that it be turned off.....love a guy that has NO idea what he is talking about.....

I drilled the following into my head very early into this hobby.
Rule # 1: While building heli, make the motor wires easily accessible Rule # 2: Any time you need to power the heli for bench work, DISCONNECT motor wires....ALWAYS. With the above 2 rules, it doesn't matter if you use BEC from ESC, external BEC, 2s lipo, solar power etc etc... |

(I just posted this a few minutes ago in another thread and then read this thread. Seems like another good reason to get a bench supply would be for safety.)
I was wondering if anybody is using a bench power supply. I am tinkering with rc electronics quite a bit and its always a pain to drag out the flight battery and hook up the ESC to get the BEC active to power the electronics. I could get a 5V NiMH pack for this at around $40. But, I have been looking on line and for around $100 I could get a 0-30V 0-5A linear power supply with constant current/voltage operation. I could put it on my bench and have it ready for any purpose at a moments notice. So, I could use it for typical electronics tinkering and since I have nothing bigger than 6S I could also power up the heli drive system without blades and charge batteries. And no charging of a NiMH pack. Does anybody have this type of power supply that they could recommend? Here is a typical unit I am looking at: http://www.circuitspecialists.com/csi2116a.html |

Feeling smart, bud? I guess you've never set up a FBL governor

However, if you want to use the autorotation-abort that is built-in to the Vortex then you have to disable the soft-start of the ESC and let the Vortex handle everything. There is no way around it, if the ESC's soft-start is enabled you can't possibly spool up faster than the ESC dictates when you want to abort an auto. This isn't anything special that only Align has. all ESCs I have come across provide soft start in heli mode. When people disable soft-start they do it for a reason as I explained above. |

I only wish when I started that I had a list of never do's in big giant bold letters that came with heli's. I have been very fortunate but have done some very unsafe things that could have ended very bad. I have learned my lesson and never do anything involving attached blades when programming, making changes to settings, etc. Used way to many of my nine lives. To give an idea, leaving tail blades on and running up a 500 on the bench thinkING I could hold it. Luckily only the super glue bottle and a set of tail blades were the cost.
