Default Tell me your engine destruction stories

I'm a little bored and so I'd like to hear some stories of how you blew up your engine. Maybe some videos too if you were lucky

Followed the manual on a 91srx for needle settings, plus the bolts on the head block were loose when I was new to nitro. I think the case hit ~400F...

Well how about me.

Got a new (to me) rebuilt 91 SRX with a new piston, ring, liner, bearings, etc. Took it apart to inspect it once I got it, saw nothing wrong, put it together, and went to fly. Running stupid rich, back plate cold and unburned fuel spitting out the pipe. About 30 seconds into the flight it shuts off. I try to start it again and it just won't go. If I had throttle at about half it will start (burning the clutch liner in the process) but it wouldn't stay running.

Finally get around to pulling it apart and discover this...

Tim Jones told me he thought it was the wrist pin retainer coming out and getting chewed up, even before I was able to get it apart and take those pictures. I couldn't even get the sleeve out of the crankcase until the next day until I went brute force on it with the vice. Alas, once I was finally able to get it out, one of the wrist pin retainers was gone...

This guy above me ^ gave me a good deal on parts, the guy who sold me the engine was extremely apologetic and paid for the parts, even though I told him he didn't have to as it was likely not his fault. It could have been just a random unlucky failure, manufacturer defect or something. But he did anyway. That made my day a lot better.

Bought a new 91srx only a few gallons through it still running plenty rich and the crankshaft split in half mid flight. Right in the middle where the air intake is broke right in half.

Seems like a pattern here with the 91srx

I also snapped the crankshaft in my 91... And my 96 started eating glow plugs out of nowhere last week after 2 gallons and needs a new piston/sleeve/ring. Fixed that one by ordering another 105... Me and ys don't seem to get along. My first ys60 ate itself after a few gallons, second one is still fine though.

I blew a rear bearing in my 91 SRX WHICH RESULTED IN REPLACING BEARINGS, LINER, PISTON, RING, HEAD.

I also had a connecting rod break in my 91 SRX around the pin and punctured the crankcase AND DESTROYED all the usual stuff. I wound up buying a new engine after that.

Beware don't ruin your 91srx or 96srx YS Engines

Purchased a 91srx which needed rebuilding. Installed the new liner, piston and ring. Read the manual for the break in procedures. .

On the break in procedures which are in the manual the 91srx states to start at 1.25 and 1.25 on the Hover and high (Full) needles, but this is wrong. Found out from another flier this should be 3.00 turns out on both needles, then tune as needed.

Below is directly from the manual:

START UP
1. Always remove Tube(A) at the check valve first
before fueling. The fuel tank is pressurized and you
need to relieve the pressure first. Disconnected
Tube(B) at the filter and fill the tank. Reconn-
ect Tube(A) and (B).
2. From the fully closed (clockwise) position, turn the
needle valves counter clockwise as follows.
● Hover 1.75 open 1.75 ~1.50
● Low 1.25 open 0.75 ~0.50
● Full 1.25 open 1.25 ~0.75

This is only to inform others and is not meant to bash!
I really wish YS would correct the manual so many others don't fry their new motors.

Same thing with the 96 SRX. Do not break in your engine with manual default values.

Start with 2.5 Turns on each needles and everything should be good.

It is unbelievable that YS continue to print those user manuals with such wrong values.
Destroyed my new engine in less than 1 min.

Now it is repaired, and it's working wonderfully.

To be honest, I got a lot of problems with my OS Engines.
Piston pin that disappear after less than ten flys, bad needles mount on a new 400$ engine, can not replace the Diaphragm of an HZR pump (100$) ....

YS engines are very reliable, but a little touchy to set.

I agree don't understand why OS does not sell the diaphram in the regulator like YS does. YS's is approx 5.00 dollars.

O.S. want approx. 100.00 to replace the complete regulator and will not sell the diaphram separately as a service part. That's crazy.

Did you try ringing up service? I was able to get a few shipped. They're not in any sort of commercial packaging though, so this may be sort of a "ask really nicely" sort of thing.

HS seems weird about certain service items. The reg being sort of silly, since so long as you aren't a brute and take a hammer to the reg parts, you can't really hurt it.

Here is my engine destruction story. Flying my Vigor CS with an OS 70SZ in it probably 3rd or 4th gallon thru it. Flying around with no problems then all of the sudden the engine started increasing RPMs and going lean. It was out quite a bit and I was trying to bring it back when the engine quits. Did a slightly bad auto into some tall grass - no damage. Took it home and opened her up and I see a hole on top of the cylinder. This was apparently a flaw in some new at the time OS 70s. Sent it in for a full warranty repair. Got it back good as new. Flew fine after the fix until I sold the heli.
